I have a Detroit full carrier locker in my front Dana 44.

When I use to jack up the front end of the truck.. I could get one wheel to spin faster than ther other. I guess this would simulate the locker ratchiting during a turn like its suppose to.

But a few weeks ago one of my hubs broke. I replaced the hub... but now when I jack up the truck... the locker will not ratchet anymore! So I tried to drive it on the street (with hubs locked) and it will barley turn. I use to be able to lock the hubs on the street and turn just fine! (while not in 4wd)

So my question is... did something happen to my locker? Can they be rebuilt? It seems to be acting like a spool now... I guess thats better than it being broke and open! Any information would be helpful!

Is it possible that your hub had been broken?? It takes a lot to break a Detroit... in fact I have never seen one break... I have a D44 in the front of my Ranger, with a full Detroit, and I would never consider locking in the hubs on the pavement. It steers hard enough on the rocks!! If I were you I would just be glad that it works...if it works too good, than don't lock the hubs on the street...

I too have hella time turning on dry pavement with the front locked in. It also will not rachet back to square and will pull to one side or the other untill I wrassle the wheel where I want it and it re-rachets. I almost ate it bad one snowy day cuz of this shit. Don't worry the detroit has really strong springs to keep it locked together so it takes alot to sepperate it. Don't like it sell it and do something different. Thats just how detroits work man, there agressive thats why we buy them.

I can understand that.. I expected that it would be hard to steer when I first installed it! but when I took it for a test drive.. I locked the front hubs and it ratcheted very smoothly! I was impressed. I had brand new warn premium hubs installed and they were fully locked.

When I would jack up the front... both wheels in the air... and locked the hubs... If I turned one wheel slowly they would both turn at the same speed. But If I grabbed one wheel and turned it really hard it would ratched and that wheel would turn faster than the other one.

But since I broke the hub.. I installed some new ones and did the same test. The detroit will no longer ratchet like it use to! If it never did in the first place I would not be concerend! But it seems that something is wrong now!

I broke a hub and the locker at the same time. I replaced the broken hub and that side would not turn at all. I toke the locker apart and I had broken some internal parts.
I was able to get replacement parts from the local Dana Spicer rep.

Yes a broken hub will damage a detroit. That's why they say not to use hub fuses with them.

I broke a full case Detroit in the rear Dana 60 in my Ramcharger. It was locked like a spool after that. They can break that way. <IMG SRC="smilies/usa.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/usa.gif" border="0">

Thanks... I found that page last night. I ran through the check list and it did not work correctly. Although it use to! So I guess something inside the locker is broke.

Broke mine last winter in my front 44 when a shaft let loose at high rpms. Pulled it apart and one side of the detroit inside had been destroyed. Nothing but little pieces when I pulled the case apart. Not pretty. <IMG SRC="smilies/eek.gif" border="0">
