I just got off the phone with the jeep dealer and they are lost. Never heard of anything like this before.

here's what i've got..

2000 jeep grand cherokee
4.0L A/T

So i'm driving my jeep the other day and stop to go in to a store. I come out and when I take off the jeep locks into first gear and won't shift. It was low on fuel but I wasn't about to put fuel in it since the tranny was acting up. So about 3 days later a guy calls me that I had just sold a 2000 jeep grand cherokee to with the same drivetrain. He tells me that his jeep did the same thing only he put gas in his and when he started it back up it shifted again. So I get in mine and limp it down to the gas station and sure enough as soon as you fuel it up it shifts fine..

When the jeep get low on fuel (like right before the idiot light comes on) it locks into first gear and won't shift. as soon as you fuel it up. BRAND NEW TRANNY!!

Has anyone had this problem or have any idea what I can do to fix this problem?

Thanks for your help.

I have a 2000 WJ I6 etc... and that has never happened to me. I have only been real low (like 20 miles past 0 miles to empty) once and it didnt do anything like that. I could see it going in limp mood to conserve fuel... maybe cause I was going 40mph plus at the time.

If you are driving when it get's low on fuels it won't do it! It only does it when you shut the vehicle off and then start it again. If you are driving and you get low it does just fine. It's like the computer resets when you shut it off and re-start it.
