Is it worth putting into a tube framed buggy or even a sammy? and i know it doesn't exactly relate to rockcrawling.. but does anyone know of anyone who's used one in a sand rail, VW, or something similiar? we have a sr20 sitting around because my friend went to a jdm (yes a rice boy i know) and he says i could have it to do something with and was wondering if it's worth my time

Thats a sweet ricer motor! It would be sweet as hell in a light
buggy. Go for it.

They are light with aluminum block and head and make good power. It would be good in something lighter being only 2 liters.
Most of the racing trucks in Japan use the Nissan engines. Very fast , light and very easy to swap in .

it would probably work great in a sand machine, as it makes most of the power up high. add a turbo and people have seen 400+ HP out of those suckers. just look up "Silvia engine" and such for more info out there. freshalloy.com has some experienced guys with em.

Check out se-r.net (http://www.se-r.net/site_index.html) for motor info. I used to have an SE-R with one of these motors in it and they are great little motors and very light. The problem is that they are only sold in the States in front wheel drive cars. Overseas they are used in AWD and RWD applications, so you might be able to use one of those transmissions or build an adapter. I say go for it!

Side note: lots of folks bringing over the RWD engines. Seach on eBay for a SR20DET and you'll see some current offerings.
I'm a long time DATSUN/NISSAN fan from days of running a Pro Rally 510. Only comment is the NISMO parts get expensive. $800 for a LSD! $400 for gears! Ouch! Still for power/weight not a bad platform to build something from.
Also thought along the lines for the Subaru AWD as a donor for a buggy. Yes, they blow transmissions... but you can find donor vehicles for $1000 (bad engine, or needing work). Drop in that flat six subaru engine... it would be a screamer. Ya, still day dreaming of how to build a $3000 project crawler!
