Thanks.......

So which transmissions were available with the 5.0L? Was 97 the last year of TTB?

94 was the Last year with the TTB. The tranny behind the 5.0 was a version of the AODE. The 5.0 and the TTB was never a combo available in the Explorer.

Hmmm...,
Maybe I'm wrong on the year (I found a few '96 V8s in the local classifieds, but no '95s)
'95 is when they completely revamped the whole vehicle, and when they went to that shitty SLA front suspension thats not practical to modify, I had lost all interest in following the changes through the years on it. I assumed thats when the V8 appeared:emb4:

There was a couple companies that were doing 5.0 conversions on the '91-'94 models, I forget who they were.

You might try Explorerforum board (http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/index.php). I'm sure they would have most of this info.

It should be mentioned these things were NOT 4X4s, they were AWD. They do not have lowrange and use one of those electronic clutch type center T-case differentials that bias power front/rear. Sometime later I think they started putting lowrange T-cases in, but I can't say when (probably after '98 or'99)

Yeah the Explorer fourm is a great place for Explorer info not just because I am a Mod. over there. I have Three Explorers in my Garage and 96 5.0 motor in my garage as well Which I want to install in my 92 Explorer later. I am worked on just about every year explorer made. They are not the cheapest thing to wheel but it sure is fun to watch all the people mouths drop wide open when you wheel your Grocery getter..

Oh yeah if you are looking to buy an X to use off road I recomend a 91-94 Swap out the dana 35 with a Dana 44 or dana 60 solid axle. Advance Adaptors is working on Transmission adaptors for Explorers and The Atlass 2 is available as well.

Actually the V-8 302 versions appeared in the 2WD
version at first in 1995. But if you order a ford motorsport
catalog for $5, the catalog has Explorer 302 "p" engines, its
worth it.

I have never seen a 95 with a 5.0 . I know that the 4.0 SOHC engine was not avilable till 97. The GT40 "P" heads were not on the 5.0 Explorer motor till mid 98. The 96 I got my 5.0 out of had regular GT40 heads.

the Explorer "P" engines in the ford motorsport catalog
have GT-40 heads

My wife and I are discussing buying one in the future. Will be for hauling groceries though, not wheelin :flipoff2:

I lurk at exploder4x4 from time to time and I've already done the V8 swap on my Bronco II. I just thought it would be nice to buy one with a factory 5.0L. For some reason I thought the 5.0 and TTB were available together. I really dislike that SLA bs.

My wife isn't crazy about Fords, she likes toyota's and other crap:rolleyes:. However when I pointed out how under powered everthing is she gained a little respect for Fords :D

So at this point we would like a mid size sport utility with 4 doors and a lots of power.

The '97 SOHC is about 210hp, but less torque than the V8 of the same year. But it is hundreds of pounds lighter, so for a grocery getter, the SOHC is a better vehicle.

I read somewhere that the SOHC 0-60mph was about 8.1 seconds, while the V8 was 8.8, due to the weight increase.

My Exploder used to be my wifes daily driver (first 75K miles), then I got it, and finally took it off road a couple of weeks ago. It's all scratched up now (tight trails overrun with manzanita), and I pushed it as far as it would go.

Yeah, not a real off road rig, but capable enough to have some fun on the minor stuff. I'm glad I had the factory tow package, which includes the limited slip rear end and some basic skid plates, as I used them both. Could have used a rear locker and some sway bar disconnects, though!

Heck, forgot this was Pirate board. I'll STFU now.

Lockers and Quick disconnects for the sway bars are available for the Explorer.

Got a link to a vendor for the disconnects? The rear is my big concern, but fronts would be nice as well.

Yeah, don't know exactly what locker I want for it. It's still a street car, and I do take it in the snow, so actually one of the best would be a Torsen, but those cost $$$$$, so I'll probably get one of the PowerTrax No-Slips. Heck, this isn't a rock crawler, I just want to get stuck a little further from help. ;)

The rear sway bar does nothing just take it out. I have not had one in my Navajo in over two years. I have a Power trax Noslip in the Rear end of the Navajo as well. The Navajo is my daily driver not bad on the Road awesome offroad.
