I am planning on putting a 4.3 vortec and a 4L60E in my next project. What is the ideal year for avoiding issues and wiring ease? What things should I be looking for in my junkyard finding mission? DO I want the W mark on it or not?
Thanks for the help fellas...

I'm interested in this topic too, looking to run a 4.3 in my next build.

I use EFI Live tuning software and it will only work on 98 and up PCM's, so if you need tuning done, the newer the better.

An old 4 bolt main 350 will cost less and give more.

How is that Rastus? Fill us in.
I am still planning on going the 4.3 route though, so the original questions still stands...

It may not apply to what you're doing, but I changed a 4L60e trans in a 93 blazer several times because of my own stupidity. All the connectors plug in fine, but there is something different about the way the computer and trans work together. No idea why but a '96 and a '98 4L60e lasted less than 10 miles in my '93 model before the were slipping really bad. The matching year worked perfectly. GM must've changed the electronics slightly .

OK so matching year for engine and trans is necessary. What year is best to look for! Come AWN chevy crew- this should be your strong suit!

The 4.3l in 07/08's NNBS fullsize trucks/vans are pretty nice. No dist. with stub shaft for oil pump and three coils for the six cylinders, and an electronic thottle as well! 195hp and 260ftlbs@2800rpm's. http://media.gm.com/us/powertrain/en/product_services/2008/Whats%20New/Gen%201eV6/08_LU3.doc

Check out a guy on ebay from Brandon Fl. that parts out s-series gm vehicles. A complete 98 or newer motor trans and wiring runs about $1200-$1800 depending on miles. A lot of wiring but plenty of power and super reliable. my 98 4.3 Sonoma runs real strong.

Cann't you use a 95 I believe. Vortec heads but the ease of TBI wiring. Correct me if I am wrong.

I don't think so. 95 was a TBI engine with TBI heads.

Damn straight its a TBI, Last of the breed.

'95's 5.7 make 200 hp @4000 and 310 ft. lbs. @2400

'96's 5.7 make 255 hp @4600 and 330 ft. lbs. @2800
Earth moving power isnt it.

Ill take a pre 98 motor any day though, Seems to me that the later one dont make good power below about 3500 rpm after that they take right off.
