1200! Wow does he need to buy anything else? Go to the library. They have a manual that covers all of the automatics at most public librarys. Or I can sell him my xeroxed copy for $800. Actually I don't know what a torqueflight 8 is maybe that is something special?

Been awhile since I've played with Automatics.
Chrysler had the "Torqueflite 6" behind the old "can't kill 'em" inline 6's. Obviously "Torqueflite 8" behind the V8's. Later they changed to 604 & 727 (perhaps after the airplane???).
Ya, I love doing stuff myself and tearing into the unknown. One problem you run into with an automatic, rebuilding it the first time, is some of the special tools. With a little time, ingenuity, and dumb luck you can make up most of the speciality tools required. Sometimes special clamps can be made by welding four "C" clamps to a metal plate, and turning all the "C" clamp handles just a little at a time. Home built tool cost: $10, OEM Tool: $200
Sounds like your buddy is up for the task of rebuilding it himself. For most folks, lacking the tools, I just recommend they pull the tranny themselves and take it into a decent shop for the rebuild. Oh, to find a decent shop... Ask the independant shops where they send their work... those guys do NOT want to pull a transmission twice for warranty work!
For fun, when I headed up an automotive electronics group, we tore down an automatic in my kitchen! It was to give the group an idea of the mechanical systems used, vs. electronic programming. Ya, actually an automatic can be easier to rebuild than a manual!
Good tech tip on 727's (http://www.asashop.org/autoinc/jan2001/mech.cfm)

thanks, he has a lath and other, so building a toll is no problem:) are you saying that his trans should not be an 8? they are an old old old , I mean old model? it's a stock 85 truck.
