Depends on your wheelbase really. If you aren't too long then 35's would be fine. I ran my old CJ-5 up there for years with 33's and always had fun. Just pick your line accordingly and don't be too shy to pull cable if needed.

Based on my whopping 1 trips worth of experience at Tellico:
I think you'd have to be pretty good to actually drive all the harder trails both ways on 35s without taking a winch or strap. Certainly it's been done, but I dunno if it's reasonable to expect to. Depends on your experience.
Put a winch and skids on, take a little body damage, and you'd have no worries. There are lines on some obstacles that would be out of the question, but if you're willing / able to winch you can get through the whole trail system locked on 35s without taking any bypasses.

i ran a cj-7 on half tons and 35s for a couple of years. if you can drive there fine if you can t then you will break. i also ran a toyota on 35s about same set up as you. sometimes you have to catch a few gears to get over some ledges when there wet but 35s worked good for me. if you run stock toyota width axels you dont want to go much taller or youll spend more time on your side then aon all four

I have been running my 36x12.50 SX's (actually measure less than 35" tall) for several years now. My main problem is lack of diff clearance due to running 1-ton axles... 35's will be fine at Tellico, especially on yota axles.
IMO, driver skill and line selection is more important than tire size.

I have ran everything at tellico, locked up, dual stock cases, and 35" bfg mud terrains. (85 4runner) Just pick the right lines and you should be fine
edit: do you have 30 spline longs? if not take it easy on the skinny pedal, otherwise BOOM!

I went to the Dixie Run and ran a few trails on 31s and no lift in my CJ7. :flipoff2:
Well it all easy shit like 6,8, part of upper 2 (had to turn around at the big rock, stupid carbuator and gearing bring the suck. :shaking:) and part of trail 8 up to peckerwood where I met the rest of the group to watch them run peckerwood.
I don't have much experence, but I'd say locked and geared it would get you more places than expected. I've learned I need skid plates and rocker protection. :D

35's will work. I'm only running 36SX's on my landcruiser and I have run everything up here, even hauling an extra 1000lbs of extra machine service junk. In the old days I had run everything up here on P7815 Buckshots (33's). Like they said pick good lines. My theory is that 42inch plus tires are for those that can't see the lines, or for our 5 ton dump trucks. Besides your birfs will like the 35's a lot better.

yea and my good friend robert's dad makes BELLFIELDS so i will be running those so i should be ok and i really dont ever plan on running any bigger than 37's or thin 38's, or 4ds with one tons

if it is dry you should be able to do most trails but might not be able to do the hard lines. you will not make peckerwood and prolly will not fair well on the right side of slickrock or at lower 2.
if it is wet good luck!

I have only run there once....a YJ with 35 Boggers, the Boggers really helped until I blew some parts. I wish it was closer so I could go there more often.

I run Peckerwood and the right side of Slickrock on 33 BFGs when it's dry, it's not uncommon, 35s are perfect for Tellico, you can still have fun and not just ride around.

Go ahead and run it...pick your lines and have some fun.
Ive seen open front IFS taco's on 33's run slickrock and the ledge as well as a double locked and cased IFS taco run all of Lower and Upper 2. Expect body damage on Upper 2 if you give it a go. That boulder at the bottom throws everything to the right and you pretty much have to hug the embankment.

Been going up there for along time and walked everything when it was dry on 35's. We did lower 2 after a heavy rain at night at the SR4RJ event this past summer on 36 tsls and never winched. It boils down to line choice and how well you know the capabilty of your rig. You will have a good time and with that 4 banger don't be scared to catch a few gears, but when it starts hopping get off the gas in a hurry.

We were up there 3 weeks ago...I was on bald 33 kms. We did lower 2 then upper 2 and the next morning did slickrock wet. Its definitely all in the line and how many ponies you dont mind releasing to get up something. Then again there is always the winch, which is perfect for the wet ledge coming up upper 2:grinpimp:

This is definitely a conversation that interests me.
I joined a jeep group about two years ago and I got flamed for having 36s. The "older, wiser wheelers" tried to tell me that there was nothing a Jeep couldnt do with just 33s. They harassed a few people and complained about how everybody thinks you gotta have 35s to have a "true" jeep.
I have never been to any major off road park, but just with what private property amateur wheeling I have done, I see that I would much, much rather have 38s with flat fenders and the rear corners cut, but that will take more money than I can afford to drop on my daily driver/trail rig.
I plan to come to Tellico in Jan too. I have been a little concerned about how well I can handle some of those trails. I am pretty good at picking lines, and have a winch, but since I havent been on any hardcore trails yet I still chicken out sometimes because I dont want to roll, or break anything and be stranded.
Glad to see everybody says that 35s are fine as long as you wheel smart.

We've done it... 36 x 12.50 x 16.5 SX's. It's fun, you can't be afraid to bang and scrape the axles and driveshafts. For some reason, we've had alot of trouble getting traction with these SX's, wet or dry, cold or smelly burnt rubber warm. I think we are going to try a set of 37-39 IROKs, a doubler, see where that puts us.... oh btw, if you add hydro assist, go ahead and plan on upgrading your knuckles. We sheared off all four studs on the pass side steering arm...

This is where some larger tires would help... The below pic is from Chuck's rock garden. We did Lower 2, but got hung up alot. Just apply a generous amount of skinny pedal and bounced our way up. Even w/ all the hang ups, it was still fun as hell.

And this is what happens when you shear off your stearing arm studs in Chuck's rock garden...

As bad as I hate to admit it, I've been pulled off Chuck's rock garden with a backhoe also. I was only locked in the front and got all the way to the top (last two large rocks that make a V groove) but kept hitting my steering and couldn't get turned enough because my back tire would catch and go dead. Chuck offered to move the front end over with his backhoe so I could drive out. In the process we punctured the rear housing (9inch) so as I was fixing it the other people in my group tried. First one overflowed tranny fluid onto his wiring and shorted the fuel pump, second in line went to back down since the garden was blocked and broke a rear 60 shaft. Third one didnt make it onto the rock garden yet so he was the only one that didn't break on it that day. Then Chuck idled up in his Totota buggy and made us all look stupid.

Yea i spotted him up the garden and its was hard but after we saw to GIANT buggys one on 44's and one on 47s have trouble we didnt feel as bad that we made it as far as we did on 35's.
but here is the video i shot of chuck making it look easy

FWIW, I was on 32x11.50 MT/Rs with my 91 extended cab last time I was at Tellco. The truck was only locked in the rear and other than the 4" SAS it was basically stock. I made it up everything I tried unassisted. Slickrock, guardrail, helicopter pad, schoolbus (went down it) whatever it did fine. Yeah the axles bashed into stuff and yeah I used plenty of skinny pedal. Now it's on 36 IROKs though.

if its not a challenge. whats the point? right!!! start out on 35's and if not happy upgrade! the less built the truck ,the more skill is involved. learn alot with a less built truck, have fun:)
