: Help diagnose this transmission issue

Truck is an 88 F150 supercab with a 302 with an auto transmission.

First question is what transmission would be in this truck?

When the engine revs up, the truck won't go anywhere, and when it does kick in, it'll jump into gear and chirp the tires. Also, when starting in first gear, the truck will just creep along until it hits second gear. What would cause this?

The truck has 200k+ miles on an original engine and transmission. Last tranny fluid and filter change was around 1.5 years ago.

Trying to help a friend out with his truck, so if more info is needed, I can do my best to get it. I know very little about diagnosing automatic transmissions, so any point in the right direction would be appreciated. Thanks.

It's tuesday, right?

Change the fluid....

More than liekly, with 200K on the clock, the bands in the tranny are toast...

And it's an Aod, or possibly an AOD-E (easiest way to tell is if it's got the O/D cancel button)

try changing the fluid/filter before anything. 200k+ might just be time for a new tranny instead of playing with one thats been beat for 20 years. just my $.02

go fuck yourself.

anyways... Changing the filter and fluid was first on my list of things to check, but it was said that the fluid had been changed a year ago, and only has a few thousand miles on it since the flush.

I'm just curious if there's any common failures of these transmissions, and what those causes might be.

Well there's your problem...

The whole trans is a failure. Like with all their overdrive Autos, Ford cheaped out on the hard parts in the trans and it lacks the durability. Be thankful you got 200K out of it... that's pretty much the life expectancy for any auto, really... friction materials don't last for ever..

Exactly which band is it that would make the trans slip while going forward in 1st gear anyway:shaking:
Just trying to be a little smarter and not look like a Tuesday idiot:D

X2. The problem is that it is a ford slushbox. Shit my np435 has 275K on it has been in 3 trucks and is still kicking.

If you drove your truck like you drive your mouth it wouldn't have lasted 20 miles.................ok 21 miles.:flipoff2:
