: 17" wheels?

Okay, just got my 14 bolt and for now a D44 HD ('til I can find a 60 for a reasonable price).

Decided to go with 37"MTRs and since I gotta buy new wheels anyway why not go with 17s and forget grindin'. So I called up Stockton Wheel a while ago. The 4x4 Special and their Explorer in 17x8 painted are $125, powder coated is $155. I thought that was a little high for a steel wheel. I don't know.

Anyway, is Stockton any good? Anyone know of a better wheel or a better price? I can't seem to find crap on the web.

Stocktom Wheels has an OK rep at best regarding getting orders out on time and correctly.

Why are you going with 17's? Have you already ordered the tires? Not much sidewall flex there at all.

I just ordered my wheels from 4WP. I needed custom backspacing on an 8 lug 15" rim. Black, powder coated and only..... $45.00! each. Shipping to my door is only $9.00 too!

Nope, haven't ordered the tires. Just thought I'd save some grinding on the calipers. I'd like to run 4-4.5 backspacing, but don't guess it matters much.

For the price difference I'll go with 15s.

What bs are yours?

Thanks for the tip Josh.

3' BS. From the looks of Cliffhanger's, I won't have to grind much, if at all, with 3" or less.

Summit has the 15" eight lug wheels for about $26 and they have around 4 1/8" BS.

GEE I wonder why all the pro rigs sponsored by Goodyear and BFG run 17"wheels??

They offer more traction due to less tread squirm on the contact patch. For you mall crawlers that never get below 15psi 15" are just fine. If you want to get to 10-5 psi a 17" will stick better.

BTW, I tried searching keywords "tread squirm". Found tread... and found squirm... I don't beleive that Tread Squirm exists. Even www.treadsquirm.com is available. Say it 3 times fast! :nuke:

Could you help me out here?:flipoff2:

Ok... So below 15psi it's too pliable. As in, there is enough "tread squirm TM" to nudge off of the contact patch?

And the 17" tire has more support at a lower psi.

Now I think I understand.

 what a tool

if you have read ANY of the 17" wheel posts in the Gen section... you would know what he's talking about.

OS is refering to the tendancy for, on a larger tire (say 37), with a 15" rim, there is so much side wall, there tends to be a lag time between turning the wheel and the contact patch actually turning the truck.

Aparently it is very noticable with the softer side-walled MTR's and radials and such, not so much with the stiffer swampers people have been running all these years.

Apperently, the 17" rim on a 37" or so tire gives you the aproximate aspect ratio of a 35"/15" combo...

:flipoff2: :D

BTW, "treadsquirm.com" sounds like a :rainbow: porn site.... anything you need to tell us?? :D

I'll have to check it out. The topic didn't even look interesting to me.
A) I run 38" SX's with thick ass sidewalls.
B) I don't remember the last time "lag time" while turning, bothered me.
C) I don't have beadlocks so, no, I don't air down below 10 -15 psi

I notice the lag, and it's annoying..

As for the no-beadlocks.. WIMP!

I have no beadlocks, and 10psi is where I START at. :flipoff2:

They do come off at 6psi when you get that heavy Scout nose pointing downhill.. but then, I'm running itty bitty 36" Bias TSLs, not big heavy 38 SXs..

I suppose the reason you want to go with 17" wheels is the terrific tire size options right!

Go with 16.5s ~ then you could upgrade tire size later.

Well, I was gonna go 16.5 with Hummer wheels and custom centers, I want radials. My rig is more for all-round use - my hunting rig - not a crawler. It'll see more highway than rocks, but will see a lot of mud. 17s looked like a good option - safety bead and a little less sidewall. I thought 17s would negate having to grind the calipers and I could run a little more back spacing - but for the price difference on wheels, I'll go with 15s.

Somebody let me know if Goodyear makes or starts making the MTR in 37/16.5?

Fawk it. For what you want to use the machine for go 17". Makes more sense.

National Tire & Wheel (http://www.ntwonline.com/) lists 17x8 Eagle alloys for $149 and 17x9 Mickey Thompson Classic II alloys for $149. Then in the future when you save up some more $$ you can have Champion turn them into beadlocks for $175 a wheel.

Rockstomper (http://www.rockstomper.com) is another possiblity or Trailready (http://www.trailready.com) sells 17" beadlocks.

I have these wheels, and I'll just say you get what you pay for. 3 out of 4 of them are bent. I think next time I'll go for some of the HD Eatons.

What did 4WPW charge for the custome BS or just $45 + $9 shipping each the final price. It sounds like a HELLUVA deal to me. Especially with 3in BS. Let me know if there is an "part#' to refer to that is the one with 3in BS as I ahte having to argue with EVERYBODY in this town as to what DOES work.

Black RockCrawlers. 45/ea + 9 for shipping. They weren't exactly custom. The dude punched some buttons on the computer and said he found some chrome with 2" bs for $49 and I said I'll take them. Just make sure they are 15's with 8 lugs! He sais he'll phone to double check. Dude call's me back to say yes, but he also says he found some black RC's too at 2.75" bs and $45! Ship em.

I'll let you know when/if I ever get them.

Yeah, I tried some cheap wheels once - bent two and ripped the center outa the other two.

When I bought my current set about 20 years ago, I ran another weld bead on either side of the spokes and then had 'em powder coated.

They've held up fine.

I've also busted a few alloys - I think I'd rather have steel.

Thanks for the tip BenW.
