: Axle identfication.

I picked up a rear axle cheap a while back and am trying to identify it once and for all. I'm pretty sure it's a 63" Dana 60, but don't know Dana axles very well.

It has 8 lugs and is full floating.

Here are the numbers from the tag on it.

Is there a website that can help me identify an axle?

Can anyone help confirm what this axle is for certain?

Thanx!

Jimmy

John, thanks for the link, but it doesn't come up with anything using the numbers from the tag.

I'll keep trying.

You need the build of material number off the axle tube.

http://www.home.gci.net/~bronco78/axle_bom.jpg

With that number you can find the info your looking for.

It could be a full floating dually 14 bolt if it is 63" and full floating 8 lug. Does the pinion have a bearing retainer that uses five bolts or does it only have the yoke?

i found a 62-63" wide dana60 in a j/yard a couple of years ago but it only had the small 19spline shafts in it.

It is a '67-'68 F-250 4x2 Heavy Duty Dana 60 open carrier. 16 spline shafts stock.
Dana's online site seems to suck for older BOM's.
Anyway, there you go. You now have your Identification.

Hey you guys thanks a lot for the information/education! I really appreciate it. :smokin: I owe ya a  or two. ;)

Now my next question is... Is this axle worth a damn? Eric you say it has 16 spline axle shafts in it? I haven't even pulled a drive plate to check yet. :emb3: Are the 16 spline axle shafts weak? Can I swap out carrier, when and if, I regear it and change drive plates to make it 35 spline or what ever might be stronger?

Thanx in advance for any more information you guys can share.

Later.

MJ I haven't even had time to open the thing up. So consequently I have no idea what shape the R&P are in. I certainly don't want them so if they are good you can have them for shipping + a 12 pack of

converting to 35sp might be a bit of a PITA... if you want 63" wide and 35spline, i have a D70 for you.

63"WMS out of a late 70s dually dodge pickup
1.5" 35 spline shafts
big ass dually drums
3.73 or 4.10s, i forget which
surface rust on the housing, but the inside is juuuuust fine!
missing a few wheelstuds and could use new bearings and obviously brakes
i will pallet it and drop it off at forward air for free, you pay for the shipping.

i want it out of my garage, so ill let it go for less than what i paid for it!!!

email me adam@pirate4x4.com

You can swap to 30 splines without any modification to the spindles but 35 slpine will probably require drilling/boring out the spindle to 1.530 minimum. 16 splines are ok but they are old and tired. Won't hold up past 35" tires IMHO. Try a search, there has been quite abit of discusion on this upgrade in the past 6 months.
Good luck.
