I've been working on the cage... minus the mounts for 3" lap belts.
I think I am about done. Looking for suggestions or criticisms
before I paint it and put it back in the rig:

looks good to me. Only suggestion i'd have would be run a vertical tube from the front upper to the "across the dash" tube, it'll help support that top a bit.

Yes, I've been considering that.. the _only_ thing thats stopped me from doing that is whether or not I'd get hasseled by Mr Police Officer on the street.... I don't street it alot, but do occassionally take the kids out for rides in the jeep...

I would have spread the top 2 stingers out a little bit more to distibute the load a little better, other than that it looks cool.

I would do it. The front that is.

I would probably go ahead and x the back,
my luck,
if I flopped it , it would be on the corner with out the brace
and rack the cage.

I fell so honored, I've been quoted:D

Looks good, if you are going to have any backseat passengers, I'd add a hoop back there while it is out.

It WAS worth quoting. :D No backseat passengers at this point in time. Will do the rear hoop stuff later.

My thoughts exactly :D :D

anyway back to tech:

What are the htoughts on instead of a complete X brace on the main hoop, going straight across for the should mounts of a harness? Probably not quite as solid as a complete X but would tie it all together...

Do the "X" if you want and make a hoop to mount the harnesses to. The "X" or "/" bar will be stronger then a straight bar. The harnesses need to be mounted low in the center of your back. 1' 4" from the shoulder comes to mind.

At least that's how I did it.

Honestly I think the single diagonal brace is plenty of support for a tough impact to the main hoop. The cross-bar would make it easier to mount belts like you said. Basically that bar isn't needed except for seatbelts IMO.

If you are going to do anything I'd just leave it. A vertical bar would be nice in the main hoop center, but it'll probably get you pulled over. (although armored cars/trucks/vans have two piece windshields with a center obstruction????)

Oh yeah I got a ticket for 87 in a 70 on the way home yesterday, FAWK!!!!!

Every place I've ever read about installing shoulder belts for harnesses say 1" to 4" below the the shoulder, not 1 foot, 4 inches. I know you went with a Y harness, so its probably different. I am probably going to do individual shoulder belts (seat won't work with the Y), and at this point I may only put the lap belts in... still trying to decide.

That's a damn good idea. We hang out of the Jeep so much to see things that lap belts are very practical. Also lets you tuck and curl in a roll while still keeping you snug.

I know the "/" is already there, but how about a "\/" meeting in the center at the bottom? That's what I'm planning for my 4(6) seater buggy cage. Mainly to allow walk/crawl through and a single out-board shoulder belt will be easy to attach (short cross brace at most).
