i have the chance to pick up two SII. for 400 for both. the guy i'm getting them from has four two chose from. i'm a jeepah but i like the SII's and i'm gonna turn one in to a rock buggy(trail rig) and the other just restore or use for parts? from what i've read in the arch's the newer SII have the better D44's right? the years of the four i get to choose from are 73, 78, 78, 80. was the 80 the last year they were made? could some one help me out with the differences between them, and which yrs are better out of the 3. thanx and now you can flame:flipoff2:

i did, i just don't feel like sitting all day looking for the questions i had. (reeeeaally sllllooowww dail-up)

any logic behind or reason behind the 78's, the 80 has a longer wheel base right? are the D44 worth keeping or trash'em

Uh, getting the two 78's just for parts interchangeability was a joke..note the ":flipoff2: " at the end?

ALL SCOUTS AND SCOUT II have 100" WB. 80 was the last year and would have a 44 front that actually has some caster built in...it should also have a rare D300 t-case with the texas bolt pattern (Same as a D20 & D18). I dunno when they started putting 44's in the front of the SII's, but by 78 that should be a for sure thing so get a 78 & the 80.

If it was California... I'd get the 80 cuz when I searched, I found out a bunch of cool stuff :flipoff2: and I'd get the 73 to swap titles and never have to smog again.

The '80 is a must 'cause of the D300.

Get which ever other one has a T-19 wide.

Better yet, give him another $600 and get all four.:D

The '73 is going to have a Dana 30 front end. '74 was the last year for the D30 front.

Between the other three, what engine tranny choices do you have?

If'en it was me, I'd grab the '80 and which ever one had the best engine tranny combo. You might get lucky and find a T-19 wide box. Better yet find a CJ and just let us have these four.:smokin:

i've got one.

one of the 78's doesn't have a body but the drive train and the motor still runs good they have the 304 in them

i was thinking about all 4 but he still drives the one to work every day, as a mater of fact he was fabing a role bar for it today in the shop. these are his kids and he's willing to come off of 2 and 2 only;)

the two 78's or the 80. those three have the 44 front, and the 73 has the thirty. I would get the 80 as the first choice and then from there on i would either choose the one that is in best condition.

Not all '80's have D300. Lots have D20. If it is a turbodiesel 1980, it will have the 300 for sure. Just don't buy em' to steal axles for the Heep clan. My .02

Then I would get the '80 and the one with the best body, if you are going to resto one of them then I would look for solid rockers, floor pan and body mounts.

yhea i've noticed on alot of SII rust out real fast. most of floor boards in the ones i'm looking at are pretty bad with a little rust on the fenders. but i can burn my own out:D
