: Pinging under load REPOST***
InsaneTruckFab 11-16-2007, 02:18 PM I posted this problem a couple of weeks ago. I recieved two good replies about how the lower plenum gasket tends to leak. And there was no doubt after seeing all of the oil accumulation in the intake that it did leak. I finished replacing the lower plenum gasket and low and behold the fucking thing still squeeks. At high RPM's it sounds like a bearing is going to blow. It also happens at low RPM in overdrive when the truck is climbing a hill either alone or with a trailer behind. I'm checking the bearings on all of the accessories tomorrow but until then if any of you guys have some insight on what could be the problem drop a reply if you wouldn't mind. Oh yeah by the way it is a 2001 1500 with the 5.9.
drnut 11-16-2007, 08:48 PM In the post you are saying its a squeek but the title says ping. They are two diffrent things. My 97' squeeks like a motherfawker at start up but its the belt tensioner going out. It also pings under heavy load and low grade gas and that is the plenum gasket. Maybe you can describe the sound better?
InsaneTruckFab 11-17-2007, 05:23 PM Tell you the truth I don't know anymore. It really doesn't sound like a worn bearing though. It sounds more like a ping. I am running 87 octane in the truck, which could be causing ping but owners manual says 87 or better. aren't most of you guys runnin regular? I'm gettin fuckin frustrated so I'm trying to cover all angles.
BlueDodgeRam 11-17-2007, 05:25 PM i run mid grade in mine, still pings but i think my plenum gasket has been blown for a while, and i have the Hughes kit but havent installed it yet. i dont DD my truck anymore though.
offroadjunkie 11-17-2007, 10:48 PM didnt have a chance to read the post cuz im walking out the door but try higher octane. when my dodge truck with the 5.9 gasser pings its because it needs higher octane.
AlrightGuy 11-18-2007, 03:16 AM If the motor has some miles on it it may just want higher octane. What parts did you use on the motor? Crap from the local parts store? Check out PavementSucks.com Theres alot of info there. I cant remember right off hand what plenum gasket is the best.
I have a 98 with the 5.9. with 145,000 It would ping like crazy. I put the Hughes kit on it, and now run 85 octane with no pinging. If I'm going to tow, I throw mid grade in it, and no problems there either. I have even done a little towing with the 85, and haven't noticed any pinging. HTH
InsaneTruckFab 11-18-2007, 02:18 PM When I did the plenum job i used Felpro Gaskets. It seems that about a year and a half ago when driving up to N.H. with a load in the bed this pinging came out of nowhere, and ever since then it never went away.
P.S. What's the Hughes kit and where can i find it?

Yeah, when (if) you replaced your plenum gasket, you should have used Hughes' improved plenum gasket plate...there are other companies that make one also. There is a TSB on re-routing the plug wires for pinging, but that rarely helps. 99% of the pinging problem is the Plenum gasket leaking. If it's been leaking for an extended time there may be a lot of carbon buildup on the pistons which will continue the problem. Mopar sells a cleaner for removing that buildup on the pistons at dealerships. They specify using it in the TSB that covers the plenum gasket problem.
Here is a link to the Hughes plate.

InsaneTruckFab 11-18-2007, 08:31 PM Coulda shoulda woulda. thanks anyway, but in the past i tried to run one of those 3m carbon cleaning solvents through my fuel rail and had a problem doing so. from what i understand with most vehicles normally after hooking it up to the fuel rail you start the car then pull the fuel pump fuse to allow the engine to run strictly off of the can of cleaner. this did not work for me, every time i pulled it no matter what i did to keep it running it would eventually die. Is there a trick with the dodge's. I'll check tomorrow for the carbon cleaner from dodge and see if it's different from the 3M. thanks
bigmopar4x4 11-19-2007, 08:12 AM I have never used it, just read about it. From what I understand, you pull the plugs and spray it directly into the cylinders and let it soak for a while. I never read anything about connecting it to the fuel rails. I am not even saying this will help, but I believe part of the procedure calls for this stuff.
