: Steering Question
samuraiguytn 11-17-2007, 05:06 PM I have yota axles for my samurai. I bought Trail gears 6 shooter knuckle and high steer kit. But I am running the Sidekick power steering. I know I could go yota steering But Im gonna have to hold off. What I need to know is what size rod end will I need to get that will fit the yota drag link and the sidekick pitman arm? Thanks
rangermike 11-17-2007, 05:27 PM Sky manufacturing makes a good kit that uses a toyota fj40 ball joints, on the knuckles and uses, (i think) a sidekick ball joint on the steering box, its a good kit, i put one on mine. Works very well, and the fj40 ball joints are fawking huge compared to the sammy ones.
dabomb5756 11-17-2007, 06:43 PM Use a heim and drill it out.

can you elaberate on this? Do you mean to drill the pitman arm out and just bolt a heim to it? is that safe?
rangermike 11-17-2007, 10:31 PM i know i might get flamed for this, but. . . i have seen more than one steering set-up's using heims, wear out and get dangerously sloopy.
Yes they might have been using "cheap" heims, but at the same time i would rather spend the money and buy something that is "right", and i know that i can trust rather than haveing that monkey on my shoulder, wondering "how long is it going to last? . . . . . " Just my 2 cents.
samuraiguytn 11-18-2007, 03:54 PM no I totally agree. I am gonna stay away from the Heim Idea unless I have no other choice.
I do have a current after market high steer kit from RRO. I will have to see if the joint will fit the trail gear yota high steer kit. if not then I will have to see if an FJ40 end would work.
Marshall-88Zuk 11-18-2007, 06:45 PM Can't you just drill the pitman arm to fit the FJ-40 rod end?
samuraiguytn 11-19-2007, 07:40 AM Thats a possibility if it comes down to it....
mattygwheeler 11-19-2007, 06:43 PM sky uses a bung welded into the drag link, maybe call sky and ask for the bung and tie rod end

Spidertrax sells the kit with all heims. I called with the same concerns and they assured me the heims will hold up.
After getting the setup i agree, they are sealed heim joints and not cheapos. They use 5/8ths inch bolts. I ran this for two years with stock steering, and i am going on a year with sidekick power steering. I plan on adding hydro assist with a stronger pump this winter.
The rig isnt daily driven, but has seen alot of abuse on the trail, and usually put away dirty. The joints show no slop or rust around the ball whatsoever.
So to elaborate, all you would need to do is drill out your sidekick pitman arm to 5/8ths.
But then again, im sure you could send your pitman arm somewhere and get it tapered for the toyota tie rod for pretty cheap too. Try Sky Manufacturing.
lil, yota 11-19-2007, 11:15 PM ask andy @ sky why they dont sell heims in their highsteer kits and you might not think about them again.
Pyranha 11-20-2007, 09:29 PM I got my heims from MidWest Control. They have good prices and the heims are stanless and teflon coated. They also have all the jam nuts and spacers you need too. I got 4, 3/4 16 heims with 3/4 bore, 4 jam nuts and 8 high misalign spacers for $98 shipped. Here is a pic of my set-up with D44's.

Marshall-88Zuk 11-21-2007, 09:22 PM Most of the double ram hydro steering setups I see use heims, don't know why it would be any worse on a regular setup.
samuraiguytn 11-22-2007, 04:46 PM Well if all else fails...I'll have to use a heim. I guess as long as it has the spacers then it really shouldn't be a problem.....:homer:
