: Hub Bolts

Anybody know if the hub bolts are the same on a Disco I vs. a series? I am placing and order with Thatched roof for some new lugs (to replace the POS GCR ones I bought that are totally rusted) and need to replace 10 hub bolts as well (to replace the POS Pep Boys ones i tried to use that rusted like crazy).

They aren't sure if the bolts are the same on older series as on Disco's.

Thanks,

Tom

I know the Disco ones are 10mmX1.5 I think the older stuff may be standard like 3/8" but I don't know.

I would suggest getting the new ones from Alan and Mimi Dobbs at GCR. They discontined the ones that you most likely have. They have this posted on their site now: "Note: This is a steel lug nuts with no special coating. With use of a impact wrench the first use will expose bare metal so naturally these will rust. "

They now sell (don't know if they did at that time) Cad ones that avoid rust. They look nice and the price seems reasonable to me. They also have another teflon coated ones too.

I know that Rovertym sells the bolts (well can get some anyways). A long time ago I wanted some slightly longer bolts for my set-up and on the D-90 source he spoke up and said he could source some if I was interested.

Yeah, I saw those. Back when I ordered mine, the GCR ones were sans disclaimer. I think I was the first guy to order rims/nuts from them for a Discovery. (check out the 15x7 rims page, there's me!)

My post wasn't to knock GCR, they are great. I like them a lot. Just knocking the nuts that I bought.

I don't like the Cad ones. Don't dig the shiny nuts sticking out from all black rims/tires/hubs. If I had some shiny metal beadlocks or something, that would be a different story.

Then what about the black teflon ones or some black spray paint?

Or better yet a gloss black powder coat trick is to get gothic black fingernail polish and touch it up with that. It has almost the same hardness properties and is tough to scratch off (really really tough BTW).

Spray paint will just come off or rust through again. Teflon are more cash, and goth nail polish? Ugh, who's got the time?

30 bucks or so for some original LR ones that will last and not rust and I will be happy.

To avoid confusion those are called lugs, not hub bolts.

The lugs (the things the lug nuts thread on) on a disco are similar but not the same as SIII, I do not know if they are interchangeable, I think no. The lug nuts from a SIII fit a discovery. The bolts that hold the axle flange to the hub are BSF (pretty sure, could be SAE but definately not metric) on a series so they will not fit a disco.

My original post was confusing. I posted both about my lug nuts and my hub bolts (that which holds on the axle flange). I guess they would be better called axle flange bolts.

The new lug nuts have been ordered from Thatched Roof. I am just going to take a wheel to the hub bolts to remove the rust and paint over them, as I rarely remove them (HD Axles don't let me down!).

 I didn't know LR made lug nuts that didn't rust

Well, once upon a time Ron told me that he had good success with the ones from Thatched roof. I may be silly, but I am trusting him.

I guess I am going on the fact that my stock axle flange bolts have not rusted at all and they have had a socket on them more than once, and my aftermarket ones rusted all to hell 2 weeks after putting them on. So, if the axle flange bolts are good stuff with whatever magic coating is on there, I am hoping that the lugs will be too.

Sorry, this thread is way below the caliber of the technical disucssions on this board. I just hate rusty lug nuts and bolts on my wheels. It does goe very well with the entire undercarriage, but it is a pet peeve of mine.

Stock SIII lug nuts that I have (same as sold by TRG) lasted 29 years in canada, and while they have some rust spots they are 90% still black.

the key is a coating of 90wt. it stays on long enough that each time you take them off you just rub some 90wt on there with a rag. keeps them from rusting and keeps em black too.
