need a new chainsaw

seeing as someone decided that they needed my husqvarna 40 more than i did, i need to get a new saw...i cut about 3-4 cords a year and have 400 to spend.. only requirement is that it has a 20 inch bar...any suggestions??

Good luck with that, when you have a problem you will get to pay shipping, wait forever to get it back, pay return shipping, it still won't be right, pay shipping again, maybe get lucky and get it back 3-4 months after you needed it.

A good saw shop is your best bet. See what dealers are in your area. Any reason not to replace your husky with the same model?

btw I've got a Jonsered 2159 and it rocks, a little above your budget though.
edit found the 2159 for 429, w/3chains, recommended up to 24" bar

picked up a new 455 rancher for 315 out the door, pretty happy..the box was mangled a little and it was discounted plus my employee discount :)

I've noticed that... my saw is beat to shit and back again (bought it from a pawn shop, it was orginally owned by a rental service), and it won't start unless I pour gas in the carb first... :eek:


However, the new ones that I've used always start right up, on full choke. You just have to pull like a man :flipoff2::laughing:

What model you got? Want to sell it? I live down the road from ya and can't pass up a Stihl in distress!

Stihl, Husky, Dolmar and Jonsered are all quality saw manufacturers with good dealer support.

Pig , If I remember correctly don't you have a 394/395X? I'm not a huge Husky fan but there larger pro models are saw'n somebitchis!

have an older 395 not the xp unit. found it on craigslist for cheap. don't use it much but i have a 36" and 24" bar for it and it throws chips like no other. also have a husky 142 which is a home owners saw, and a mchullough mac 140 old skool metal cased saw. absolutely love my huskies. would have loved to buy a larger saw than the 142 but money was an option. had about $400 to spend and needed two saws cause i had rounds from 54" to 6" and the 395 weights in at 10 pounds with out the bar and chain:laughing: next saw i buy will be the 350 rancher with a 20" bar.

biggest piece of advice i have is to buy said saw from a saw shop(if buying new) and if buying used make sure you have a shop local to service it. yes you can change the filters or fuel system but if the carb needs work or the idle adjusted or you just need chains and yes you will need them its very nice to go in once and get the correct chain and file(if needed) the first time.

I use to take a bunch of saws with me when I went fire wood'n , now I take one! I have a woods ported Stihl big bore 460..and 20"26"and 36" bars .. it's light enough to use for hours at a time and powerful enough to cut almost anything growing in Ohio..:laughing:

The full skip chains are bad for kickback and are very rough in anything but WOT conditions. There big plus is they let smaller, less powerful saws pull longer chains/bars. Most of the dangerous kickback that occurs when operating a saw is operator error not chain selection. Safety chains do reduce the likelihood of kickback but they also slow the cutting process and take about 25% longer to sharpen.

A 24" bar is a little big for a MS310 and would need a full skip to stay in the power band, I had a 310 before my MS460BB and it didn't have close to enough ass to pull a 24" non-skip.

Save your pennies and get a MS361 , it's the ideal firewood saw!

Very good ! The photos are of my Bailey's big bore kitted 044, I don't have any of my 046/460. I just wanted to brag on my biggest saw and didn't have any pics of it assembled.

Between my Dad, Father-in-law, & me, we have a couple of big STIHLS, a Husky, and old McCoulough. Last year I added a little Echo CS-346 w/ a 14" bar to the collection.

For general wood cutting & clearing work, that little echo is the cats ass. Unless we are cutting big stuff, the echo is what everyone reaches for. It's a gutsy little saw that you can handle all day.
