Just bought it. It has 83k on it. What should I look out for? Links are appreciated.

Water pumps like to go around 90k-105k

Don't go bigger then 33's or you can bend the rear housing destroying any differential you have.

The two piece front axle shaft is a PITA if you have to tear into it.

You cant service the front unit bearings, so if they go, you have an excuse to install lock out hubs, solid one piece shaft on pass side.

You might be due a clutch replacement right now if its never been done. while you are at it, replace the slave cylinder while your at it, basically everything dealing with the clutch.

Check your belt, it might be cracking by now.

Other then that, they are fun toys

Pretty sure that the front end is NOT a 2 piece set up. It's a TJ not a YJ.

But the rest for sure. A friend just bought a 97 TJ with a 4 popper and 5 speed and 78k miles. The rear pinion seal was leaking-might be something to look into.

Good luck with it

Check all your belts and hoses... flush radiator. Drain and refill diffs, tranny, and transfer case... be sure to put correct fluid/gear oil in each of these. Join a local Jeep Club and be active in it. Jeeps are fun to work on, and a blast to wheel, if done correctly. :smokin:

Final advice, read, read, and read more on Pirate4x4.com as there is tons of good information here. You will also want to search for write ups for popular modifications and general Jeep maintenance procedures. Here is an example of some good write ups..... http://www.stu-offroad.com/ Spend some time on Stu's Web site, it will be well worth your time.

The clutch is original, but it does not seem to be slipping at all ( it was driven by, I kid you not, a now 60 something old woman who was the original owner).

Tell me more about this front axle issue. What do I need to buy?

How hard is the waterpump replacement? I assume they have a weephole I can check to see if the bearing is on the way out?

What size tires can I run on it stock? I have some 235 85 R16s just sitting around. Also have some 225 75 R16s. It has the cheapy 15in steels on it now.

It has an AX5 and an NP231?

When you say belt, do you mean serp belt or does this thing have a timing belt for the motor?

Thanks!

You really shouldn't have any problems with the front end. Other than the front wheel bearings be non-servicable it is decent for what it is.

The water pump is pretty easy to work on. The fan shroud is huge on the 4 cyl so you have plenty of room to work once the fan is off.

I believe that it should have an AX5 and a 231

I recently bought a 98 tj, and stuck 31X9.50 swamper ssr's on it with no rubbing on 15x8 american racing steel rims. First mod i did after the tires was pulling front and rear sways. That was well worth the extra body roll.

Do you drive it on the road like that?...
