Have an older sanborn black max compressor that is not so speedy anymore. It has a Magnatek motor on it rated as SPL in the HP field. I assume that is that is is a 5hp compressor rated.
Has a 60 gallon vertical tank.

What will this drive in a new compressor, anything great?

I also have a 3hp 220v Leeson motor setting in the back of the shop that needs new bearings. If I fixed it up (parts where?) I could make a stand and drive a bigger compressor.

Just looking for recommendations on brands and models.
Upgrade and piece something together or just buy an all new setup? Will I save any cash to speak of?

I can't remember exactly what SPL stands for but it a rating of the motor's starting horsepower. It's true running horsepower is less than the SPL horsepower and is indicated by the rated amperage of the motor. If it's a 240V motor rated at 15 amps, then it is a 3-3.5 hp motor.

When sizing the compressor to the motor, it doesn't matter if it's a 120V motor or a 240V motor. 3hp is 3hp no matter what voltage it is, so a 3hp motor will drive a compressor designed for 3hp input. Also, you need to look at the motor speed (usually either 1725rpm or 3450 rpm) and the intended operating speed of the compressor as well as the pulley diameters (drive and input) to make sure the compressor is turning at the speed it was intended.

When my 60 gallon, 3hp Sanborn dies, I think I'm going to keep the tank and look at upgrading the motor & compressor to a 5hp two stage.

The 3hp leeson is at least twice as large physically as the one on the compressor now. Maybe it has a better duty cycle or something?

I will have to look at some more specs on the plates.
