I just bought a tank of 75Ar/25CO2 from a local welding supply house (Rockford Industrial Welding).

A couple weeks later, I get mailed the purchase agreement. It states that I can only get the gas refilled from them. Can they require this? I bought the thing, it is not a rental.

Try refilling it somewhere else. You may get it filled, you may not. Rockford will never know.

Say you get a fill somewhere else. They swap you one of their tanks. You go back to Rockford. They tell you to pound sand, they're not filling someone else's tank.

Maybe you bought from the wrong guy?!

This is what I am thinking. They are supposed to call me back on Monday with a 'resolution'. I told them that telling me now (several weeks after I started to use it) that I must refill it there is absurd.

They are trying to tell me liability crap, since they have their name on the tank that I own.

every place around here trades the bottles

edit.. there are only about 3 places around here that even deal with this stuff.. whats the big deal about filling it there? you get to know the people, you'll get better service. it's not like every corner sells welding gas..

IMO your a baby, it's not a big deal, your just making it one. :flipoff2:

Jb weld to fill the stamp, sand smooth, repaint.

lol, then nobody will fill it since it doesn't have their name on it.

It's the same around here and I don't blame them for it at all. There is quite a large insurance policy required to sell flammable and explosive compressed gases. If it were me I wouldn't want to touch someone else's tanks not knowing what they may or may not have done the last time it was filled.

C25 (what you bought) is neither explosive or flammable. Bottles are hydro tested by a licensed facility and if it is in date, there is nothing that is going to mysteriously go wrong with it. The valve assemblies are easily replaced, and are more likely to get fucked up by a end user than a fill facility, so the chances of them getting a screwed up tank from you are much higher than getting one from another distributor.

You can order an unstamped tank from HF, and many, many other places. There is no requirement that a tank has to be stamped to be filled. Granted your guys may be pricks, but most places simply swap the tanks, not fill them (see the other thread about this, about 6 posts away, stolen?). I have gotten bottles stamped from all across the country from airgas inc. as well as bottles with no stamps at all. I guarantee you that someone will fill or exchange your tank, even if the jacks you bought it from wont.

Jason

It's illegal for them to try and inforce that. No company can make an agreement that restricts free trade. look under The Sherman Act. It's called a Tying Contract.

Damn, legal studies class does come in handy...

What a load of crap. If the bottle is in cert, welding places here take it. I went to Tractor supply's setup. It's nice running to get a new bottle at 5 pm on sunday. Even at that though, I can take their bottle to any welding place to get filled.

Gotta go w/FullsizeYota on this one. It's welding gas, not world peace, so what's the big deal?

My supplier swaps, including purchased bottles, so I see the point of wanting to maintain control of their (extended) inventory. You can probably fill your bottle anywhere, but they may balk at accepting a bottle you received somewhere else.

Good luck.

I own a few large 250CF cylinders with no markings on the collar. I own these bottles and have no issue getting them filled at a particular welding shop. Each shop has their own rules so you need to find out what they are before you buy and try to get them filled.

I'm starting to see from threads like this that some of you guys just have ass holes for welding gas suppliers. With all three of the places around here we just drive up, set the bottle on the dock, and a new bottle is waiting when you come back out. They check the sticker to make sure theyr'e swaping it for the same gas and then roll it off. Have some of you guys having these issues tried another supplier.

The only time you should have a problem is if the bottle says property of ______ but a collar just saying _____ is a customer owned. Hell the collar can be removed on the bigger tanks. Never had a problem with a different place filling one of mine
