: Tips for freeing stuck bearing on SM465 output ** with Pics

I'm currently removing all the bearings on my recently acquired SM465. I've managed to press out 2 of the 3, but the one on the output shaft seems to be frozen on there. Any tips. I already removed the nut locker and nut so it's not that. I tried pressing it out and damn near lost body parts when the bearing shot out of the holder.

Thanks

Freeze the main shaft assembly, then chuck it in your press or install your puller. Apply pressure. Then pour on the heat (acetylene torch, or lay a bead with your favorite arc welder on the inner race) to rapidly heat the bearing while the shaft is still cold.

It works best if you put the heat on one side so it will grow out. Rose bud on one spot till it's red usually does it.

If your are pretty steady handed you can take a cut off wheel and cut a grove into the inner race on both sides once you have cut the outer cone off. You can then take a chisel and pop the race apart with a few taps..Just be carefuel you don't cut through it and damage the shaft surface..Hope this helps. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

Let me tell you that Fawker is on there tight. I tried the old heat the inner race trick, then I sprayed brake cleaner on the shaft to try and cool it. All that happened was a 1/2 inch chip of the outer race flew off. Back to the drawing bored, I think I may go with the cutting wheel idea tomorrow.

I've done the cut-off wheel trick many times.
And don't be in as hurry either.
I think a dremel tool is the best way to go.
very small groove, and take your time.
I've never gone into a shaft using the dremel
but it wouldn't take too much effort to "uh-oh" using a die grinder with a cut-off wheel.

good luck. (wear glasses)

I finally got it off. You can see the in the first pic cutting the inner and outer race so I could remove the shaft. http://hatchery.gg.utk.edu/people/milan/bear1.jpg

And the second pic is the final result once I got it off. http://hatchery.gg.utk.edu/people/milan/bear2.jpg

next time leave the clip on the bearing. pound the mainshaft with brass mallet or brass punch to break the bearing free. Than use a puller.
