: help me decide which chevy???
ncjeepin 11-23-2007, 09:25 AM ok, i am in the market for a classic chevy 1 ton 4x4 pickup. it will be a daily driver as well as my offroad rig as well as something i plan on driving to panama and back. At some point it will have a diesel and a manual trans.so i am running into a few questions.
1. what is the difference other than axles between 1/2, 3/4, 1 ton models
2. what should i look for in a old chevy. ie:frame rust, certain model years, tc, etc.
3. and probably the most important where are they....? everyone says parts are everywhere so i assume that also means trucks are everywhere, but i can't seem to find any and when i do they aren't 1 tons..any ideas?
generally any tips you guys have for me i'll be happy to take.
r0nin89 11-23-2007, 04:20 PM 1 ton = th400 trans or heavy duty version of the sm465 and a 205 tcase.
Has a dana 60 front axle and 14b full floating rear. Pre 79's I believe had dana 60 or 70 rears. 8 lug axles.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
3/4 ton = th350/700r4 , rarely th400 trannies or the light duty aluminium sm465, 208 case sometimes 205 (dont hold me to that).
Has a dana 44 front (pre 79) or 10bolt and 14b or d60 (pre 79). 8 lug
---------------------------------------------------------------------
1/2 ton = Only weight rating made short/stepside bed. 700r4 sometimes th350, light duty sm465 for a stick. 208 case.
Has dana 44 front (pre 79) 10bolt post, 12bolt rear (pre 79) 10bolt post. 6lugs
For simplicity if you anticipate having to do a stick swap the best bang for your buck would be a CUCV truck. Its a 6.2 diesel which while they are a dog its still diesel torque. Those trucks are all 1tons with a th400 automatic. They come with 4.56's and a locker in the rear stock. Definatly a good deal. Drop an sm465 behind it and put your lift and tires and your good to go.
If your looking for a woods truck there is the options of running a shortbed and swapping all the running gear out to a 1ton truck's. Some people dont like the long wheel base and doing 3 point turns where the jeep guys just go without problems.
Some people like me :D
ncjeepin 11-23-2007, 05:40 PM oh ok, i thought there may be differences in the frame thickness or something. well the front runner is a cucv actually. will a sm465 need an adapter? forgive my ignorance. another stupid question is: isn't sm465 a 2wd tranny? does it need anything extra for 4wd?
thanks
Odin K30 11-23-2007, 05:48 PM The frames are thicker on the 1 tons. Also 73-81s have thicker frames than 81-87, GM changed the frames and made them lighter for fuel economy on the 81 and newer. The SM465 was used in 2 and 4 wheel drives. I used a shortbed frame and swapped over all 1 ton parts. I like the shortbeds better the 8 foots have a very wide turning radius.
ncjeepin 11-23-2007, 06:13 PM so what would i be looking for between 73-81 that has a 60/14b combo? i think it may be better to just buy a classic truck, diesel, sm465, cucv axles. how much can i expect to pay for a old pickup? actually kinda broad question but, hey. basically i got $3500 (for now)so what do you guys think i should do.
with my needs a longbed has more advantages then disadvantages. i may however chop the end a bit but it depends..i figure i can get a 91+ 6.2 and sm465/205 $1000 60/14b $1000(too much??) that leaves me with atleast $1500 for a truck????ideas

wrong.
first off, the 14b was used from 73' on in both 1 ton and 3/4 ton. there may be a few d70's but no d60's after about 70'.
1 tons, 3/4 tons, and 1/2 tons can all come with a 205, 203, 208, and 241 transfer case.
and they also come with the same sm465, not matter what the GVWR is. the only difference would be the output shaft. 465/208 will have a 32 spline output shaft, and the 205/203 versions will have a 10 spline. they are all cast iron cases.
also, iirc, there wasnt a k30 (4wd 1 ton) before 77' when the d60 front was introduced.

Heavy duty version of the 465? I didn't know that there was a "light duty" version....
And there wasn't an "aluminum light duty version", I think you are thinking of the 465 trannies post 1980 that had aluminum case tops, its not light duty brother.

Jediwelder 11-24-2007, 12:07 PM Biuld One,Maby? I took a 83 Blazer, Bolted in one ton running gear, wa la, One ton Family Car/ Rock Crawler/ Wood Hauler(w/trailer). I do like the 10" shorter wheelbase of a blazer , But I guess It depends on what you want do do with it.
On the other hand I've always wanted a one ton early 70's pickup.

what is a light duty sm465?

cucv should be good. adaptor for what? there are 2 and 4wheel drive versions of the 465
on a side note are there 4wheel versions of the sm420? and that is stronger than a 465? right?

Uhhh, no it isn't stronger.
SM420 = synchro-mesh transmission rated 420lbs/ft
SM465 = synchro-mesh transmission rated 465lbs/ft
Where do you guys get your information from?
Oh wait, let me guess. Other people on Parrot4X4 who don't know what the fuck they are talking about.

i dunno i read somewhere that they came in dumptrucks and stuff. what is stronger than a sm465
dahoyle 11-24-2007, 11:33 PM Oh, for fucks sake. you're throwing out bullshit information on 2 seperate posts about transmissions. One about Automatics, one about 4 speeds, and it is quite apparent that you have no fucking idea about either one, so why don't you shut the fuck up, read the posts, and try to learn something, rather than proving to the whole world what an idiot you are.
Grumpy_old_fart 11-24-2007, 11:57 PM lol.... busted........
now I remember why i didnt try to correct this thread.... too much shit wrong in the first place.

Comparing dump trucks and 465 transmissions for strength is like trying to compare Dell XPS laptops and mountain goats for intelligence.

well i'm glad you guys didn't let me leave this thread believing that 2nd post...lol...well i'm really leaning towards a cucv/70's k-30,

try for an 80 and later version. the early axleshafts on the dana 60 were necked down a bit. Most k30s had 4.10 gears, but there are some out there with 4.56s
either way, a k30 should have the np205, vs the cucv's NP208. not all cucvs had 205s...

well fuck man i didnt know i just heard. and the other tranney thread, i have a hd case and i was wondering if it is better than a k case but i guess they are both one and the same just different lettering cast into the case. i dont see to much wrong there. hade some dude tell me my case was a k case which it is not, maby a miscommunication about what i was asking but in that thread i was not claming anything so really i dont see how i was wrong. this one yes i was flat out wrong but hey i am learning and you still didnt answer my quiestion as to what is stronger than a sm465 or is that one of the strongest manuals chevy offered? there learn me something...

YOU DO NOTICE THE "right?" as in am i right or am i wrong fuck man so i made a mistake in my wording... should have gone like this....
are sm420s stronger than a sm465... you answer: the #= im guessing the max torq for the tranney so ya uhhh learned something new there.
