: FJ40 special edition???
Deep South Cruisers 06-25-2002, 07:15 AM I stumbled up on a stock 1978 FJ40 that had differen't leaf springs (helper springs) and a slogan on the back
"DON'T MESS WITH TEXAS"
The owner says its a special edition "TEX" model but i've never heard of such a thing. Is this some Hokey dealership add on or were there some special edition FJ40's:question:
Eskimo 06-25-2002, 07:36 AM I can get those "Special Edition" stickers at the local auto parts store, right next to the "Toyota" windshield banner. He was blowing smoke up your ass.
With a 25 year old vehicle, who knows WHAT was done... helper springs, maybe he towed alot?
Deep South Cruisers 06-25-2002, 08:12 AM it was purchased NEW from a local delaership with these "options"
I was thinking the same thing.....add a leafs and a sticker:laughing:
rick d 06-25-2002, 09:02 AM late model 40 series (after 1981) got the 'LX' package that included carpet and sound panels for the back of the tub. Also, a hideous zebra strip pattern seat cover. No record of 'don't mess with texas edition'. Nolen et al care to comment?
....anybody know the history on the Chevy 'Motion' series out of Pennsylvania or wherever wrong coast dealership? all cars were ordered with 454 big blocks and had a custom fade white to black or black to white pattern in the early 1970's...???

Baldwin Chevrolet in Long Island I think... they had corvette and camaro packages in different stages. kinda weird paint jobs on some, with really gaudy fiberglass work.
Try this for a link...

dont forget the 5 speed, special edition dash, air conditioning, factory power steering, rollbar, tachometer, sldiing rear widows, 3 windscreen wipers, some had 2 single seats and a rear heater even
but these are rare even over here  :D
cruiserbrett 06-25-2002, 04:12 PM 3 windscreen wipers
???? any pictures?
texican 06-25-2002, 04:35 PM I purchased a 73 FJ40 from the original owner, and it had Chrome bezel, running boards, and windshield vent, along with a grill guard that I have seen in old Downey catalogs. He said all of this was on it when he drove off the dealers lot in L.A.
It is a lot like dealer add on's today, lots of dealers did it.
rick d 06-25-2002, 05:06 PM Roid-
we got a/c, ps, bucket seats, roll bar, and center heater but still not LX.
3 wiper deal yes.
Canada got BJ42's w/ H55 and all above, but no a/c.
tach is rhd models only.
....then Specter just got in a factory forward facing rear seat LX model-
(bastard)

most 100,000 yen and above are cruisers (complete). Many of the 40 series you will find are LX (including stool brown interior).
nuclearlemon 06-25-2002, 09:39 PM there was a "baja" cruiser done back in the late 60's/early 70's, but i think that may have been a dealer option, other than that, the only specialty that i know of was the "king of the hill" deal (heavier suspension and special striping...possibly all came with plows, cause all the ones i've seen had little plows on them)
bernefj60 06-26-2002, 01:51 PM I looked at a 1978 FJ40LV-UC the other night. Very weird truck.
Forst off, it had a 1974 F motor and 3 speed trans. With the matching glovebox shiftpattern, etc. Obviously someone had at somepoint swapped it in for the original 2F, becasue the VIN plate obviously said 2F.
Also, the guy had drive plates instad of hubs.
drum brakes up front, and vent windows in the hard top.
Late body (in keeping with 78) and motor had a working carb fan.
Very odd. Worst thing was, the guy selling it had no idea of any of this. I felt kind of bad telling him.
The truck was apparently brought in from guatemala by a guy who worked for State, and sold it to this guy, who painted it and stored it for 4 years before selling it.
I'd take it on but it's too much work for me. if you are interested, let me know. The guy is in falls church, va.

Deep South Cruisers 06-27-2002, 01:52 PM I only had 1 person (from CCOT) that had EVER seen such a thing.
quote from Gerry:
"I think there was a texas edition. that other idiot doesn't know his arse from a hole in the ground!! It came with a big set of steer horns on the hood (a la DUke's of Hazzard Boss Hogg), an oil rig in place of the toyota T emblum on the steering wheel, and oversize tires, cause, well, everything's bigger in texas.. at least that's what my dealer told me..worth every penny!! "
I'm going to check it out Saturday morning, I'll take a digital camera and report back here Monday

Does ANYONE remember when TxDOT (Texas DOT) did the "Don't Mess with Texas" stickers? I seem to recall 1983-84 it when they rolled out that anti-liter campain. Stevie Ray, Fab. Thunderbirds, etc. Pretty funny to have had that sticker on a NEW 1978 model cruiser!!! :)
Tom :usa:
Deep South Cruisers 06-28-2002, 12:11 PM I DO remeber that campaign
one of the weirdest things about this cruiser is that it didn't come from Texas:confused: and I don't think the cruiser or the owner have ever been to Texas. This FJ40 was bought new at a Birmingham, Alabama dealership and its still here (2nd owner).
I should have pics this weekend for you guys to inspect:D
great... i can't wait to see it...

Deep South Cruisers 06-29-2002, 11:01 AM Here she is:D
Deep South Cruisers 06-29-2002, 11:02 AM TEX;)
Deep South Cruisers 06-29-2002, 11:03 AM dont mess with Texas WAS painted on the back doors:p
Deep South Cruisers 06-29-2002, 11:04 AM
Deep South Cruisers 06-29-2002, 11:05 AM motor....Weber:confused:
Deep South Cruisers 06-29-2002, 11:35 AM :smokin:
Deep South Cruisers 06-29-2002, 11:36 AM ;)
Deep South Cruisers 06-29-2002, 11:37 AM
Deep South Cruisers 06-29-2002, 11:41 AM so there it is, the odometer is broken (43,XXX miles) there is body filler on thr front fenders, assorted dents, some BASTARD cut a sunroof throught the original headliner. The floor is rotted behind the seats as shown. It has a header 33x12.50 ground hawgs and a extra set of lift springs and extended shackles.
$6500 is his asking price:confused:
what do you guys think:rasta:
ginericfj80 06-29-2002, 12:58 PM I think in Idaho that rig would bring 2500. If you really want a rust free rig come on out. I'd be happy to look for one out here for you. Right now there are a half a dozen for sale in the 3-7,000 range. And most of them don't have much rust. Usually the back section below the rear doors and sometimes behind the turn signals in the fender. Otherwise ours are pretty clean.
wngrog 06-29-2002, 01:33 PM $4500 is more in line for that one...if you are going to spend $6500 on that, you should bite the bullet and go to some of those 8-10K ones you have been posting.
FJ60, that thing looks like a piece... I'm sure you can get a much
better one for that price...
lcsixty, would you mind doing some research for me in the lower
end of that range? it would be very apreciated...

nuclearlemon 06-29-2002, 05:16 PM $6500 no way...i agree with the $4k range.
highly possible that that is a "special (dealer) edition" because the striping bears a strong resemblence to the 'king of the hill' editions i mentioned earlier.
Deep South Cruisers 07-01-2002, 05:15 AM I would agree to the $4k dollar range, so far I'm the only one to actually go see the truck, so we'll see how long he holds out at that price.
Grog, thats exactly how I feel about it too, solid doors, floors and a uncut hardtop would be worth the extra cash IMHO. I have 3 others in the works, I just have to make time to go see them.
thanks for your comments:D
Eskimo 07-01-2002, 08:03 AM Here's a nice 40 in Salt Lake...
