I've been wanting a bigger air compressor.. and been watching craigslist for one. I want a 2 stage type, that'll put out alot of CFM to keep up with my air hungry power tools and do some sand blasting. I am willing to peice together one.. and dont want to spend alot of money on one right now.

I found this on craigslist:

air compressor 230volts 160psi

I cant tell from the pic what type of pump or motor it is. but 160psi tells me it might be a 2 stage ? Physical size tells me, it looks like it is powerful/industral/or plain out OLD ? Could this work on a bigger tank ? How do I figure out how much air this could put out ?

Looks like a 13 gallon. Unless the proportions are way-off on that pic, but not many bigger units are wheelbarrow type.

Those are mostly 9-13cfm unless CFM Free Air, and probably 6-8CFM @ 90PSI. (That's total random guess based on other units in that size.)

It looks heavy duty because it's an older unit, look at the size of the motor it's huge. It probably is more heavy duty than units sold today from home depot and lowes.

You can tell CFM by the pump and the size motor mated to it. You'll have to know the pump specs, but if you want something that can sand blast I would suggest 60+ gallon tank, and atleast a 5hp motor coupled with the appropriately sized pump.

thanks for the tips. I didnt realize this was a "wheelbarrow" type, but that makes sense. I did notice the wheelbarrow types have a higher psi rating, why is this ? What is diffrent about the pumps ? How do I find the pump's cfm rating, what specs do I need to know ?

Thanks
