So I am in the process of boatsiding my yj. I have searched and not found alot of pic's. So I thought how about a thread on boatsiding as I am sure more people would do if if there were some instructional threads. I am going for the same look as the jeep "derangement" in crawl magazine, red one CO plates.

Not on a hardcore Jeep, but I think they came out pretty well.

I used RockSkullz method to get the angle right along the floorboards so they matched up with the new sheetmetal on the outside. Worked really nice.
http://www.personal.psu.edu/students/m/s/msl197/Jeep/TechArticles/Boatsides/Pict0538_small.jpg

trace the line to keep the angle the same along the floorboards, then cut along that line.
http://www.personal.psu.edu/students/m/s/msl197/Jeep/TechArticles/Boatsides/Pict0541_small.jpg

The new skin will line up nicely with the floor if you follow that line. I welded mine in like TeenyCAR's, with plans to skin the outside with 3/16" bent to follow the new lines.

There used to be someone who made boatside rockers, are they still in production?

I have one of three sets ever made by Poison Spyder on my CJ. They were NOT bolt on and required massive cutting to get them on. I guess that's how it goes with pre-production parts. They don't always fit as intended. Last time I checked with Paul, they plan on doing a redesign and coming out with a 45 degree rocker that will look more like the Bruiser design and extend past the body mounts. Not sure how that's going to look, but hopefully they will install a little easier. BTW, PSC called them Rumble Rockers:laughing:

I'm from the camp that believes the most important part of this job is shaving the body mounts. I hit those easily as often as the rockers.

I'll chime in here because i was on of the first guys around this part of the state running boatsides, thanks to Andy Muhr who is now part of Moab outpost4x4. Back in 2002 he started building some rigs in his shop with that design and tested out a set on my old blue YJ, here's how they came out. As for them being "cool, but not all the helpfull" :shaking: My new CJ-7 will have a revised version of my old boatsides....mostly being some 1-1/2 .120 wall DOM running under the door opening to add a little strength to the 3/16" plate...i had some issues with bending the plate on some hard hits.

My boatsides are one of the best mods I have made. I actualy cut my body mounts off and drilled the frame in 13 places, then taped and bolted the boatsides to the frame. I cut the rockers 3/4" from the bottom of the door line and bolted the body to that with another 11 bolts. Using the boat side as my body mount.

mine has been solid mounted for a year with no problems.

i did mine a little different than most of these, i brought the steel from the tub to the bottom of the frame. i made a frame out of tube to support it and serve as mounts for the cage. i used 3/16 to plate the outside. the frame is curved from the front to the back so the plate i added looks like it twisted. if you do it this way it will give you the most clearance and the smoothest sliding surface.

I heard GenRight was making a set of these for production but have yet to see anything about them. They make a mini-boat side rocker but that's it. The Rev111's are probably the nicest I've seen so far too bad they went out of business quite a while ago.

I wish BTF or KORE or ??? would start making some boat sides for production!
