: broke off a bolt.... now what?
joes75bronco 06-25-2002, 10:10 AM well I just had my EB flywheel rebalanced to an 89 spec.. and resurfaced.... putting my new clutch assembly on and crack.. I broke off a bolt inside the flywheel... so now what? I'd rather not just drill ut the whole thing, butI might have to... what are some tricks yall have done?
Nobody 06-25-2002, 10:12 AM Should be easy enough to extract. Heck, probably won't even need the extractor. I bet just by drilling it, it should spin on through.
Might want to pick up a torque wrench! :nuke:
joes75bronco 06-25-2002, 10:16 AM yeah I'll try that....
I do have a torque wrench... only at 40lbs... grade 5 bolt...
JeepinIan 06-25-2002, 10:19 AM Get a left ahnd drill bit. It may pull the broken piece out by itself. If not, then use an easy-out.

if theres any raised area at all put a punch in there, hook it and spin it back. Without the head there should be nothing holding it in there and it should back out easy.
WheelingPiazza 06-25-2002, 10:29 AM I have used this same process to remove hub bolts, Linkage bolts ETC..
EZ outs are a joke..

Actually EZ Outs work quite well.
The secret is to be smarter than your tools....:flipoff2: :D :flipoff2: :D

joes75bronco 06-25-2002, 10:48 AM I appreciate the ideas... I drilled a hole on the edge of the bolt and stucka a small nail and backed it out.. it was a lot looser than I thought it'd be... appreciate the ideas.
boz88xj 06-25-2002, 11:42 AM I agree, EZ outs rarely work as good as they should.
Save your time and drill and tap.
joes75bronco 06-25-2002, 11:57 AM well damn..... it happened AGAIN.... Same hole... brand new grade 8 bolt.... luck really isnt with me... this time it;s in there tighter so I'll have to do more than what I did last time.... this is wierd....
the torques for these pressure plate bolts is 65lbs.RIGHT?. on a ford..
JeepinIan 06-25-2002, 12:02 PM Try tapping the hole out. You may have some screwed up threads.
Was the flywheel sahved? Check the dimensions, it may bee too thin and/or the bolt too long.
billj 06-25-2002, 12:26 PM Are the holes in the flywheel thru or blind?? Sounds to me like you got one hole that either has incomplete or messed up threads...

I just did a Mustang clutch and I think the book said 24 ft/lbs.
joes75bronco 06-25-2002, 01:43 PM yeah that was my problem.... where the hell did I get 65 lbs....
I'll have to get creative with it now..
cut a groove in it with a dremel and use a screwdriver

Now that is funny... Left hand drill bits work even better. :flipoff2:
The harder you make it the harder things are ;)
kinda like GM steering arms
jeepps 06-25-2002, 02:52 PM Stop buying your bolts at Wal-Mart!
twistedmetal 06-25-2002, 05:26 PM Assuming the bolt is atleast flush with the surface, I've had good luck zapping nuts or small peices of steel to the broken peice and easily removing the offending POS!
