I was reading through some old mags last night and I came across an article on D60s. I start reading and in the middle of the article it says that "Front Dana 60s came with either 30- or 35-spline inner shafts and almost all of them came with 30-spline stub shafts." This is in the Dec 2000 issue of Peterson's. What's the truth to this? Everyone on here says that they are all 35 spline inners. Anyone know who is right?

That's exactly what I am talking about...Everyone on the PBB (and aparently in the bible) says that they are all 35 spline...HOWEVER, the dudes in the mag are saying something different. Who is correct?

To me it sounds like they are saying the outers are 30 spline.... and that is true.

Didn't the early closed knuckle style D60s have 30 spline inners?

Newer Dodge D60's (non-deisels) do not have 35 spline inners. I know, I have one sitting in my garage!!

I don't think the diesels do, either. Not positive, didn't count mine when I had them out, but 30 spliners would match up nicely with the rest of the light duty crap in that front end.

Thanks for some solid info. Shouldn't the "bible" be updated with this info? Also, if I were searching around and came upon one of these 30 spline 60s & I plan to cut it down and get new inner shafts anyways, will they accept 35 spline inners? (I realize that the carrier needs to be changed also)

When Dodge went to the new body style, in '94, they asked Dana to cheapened up the
60 frontend. So, Dana produced 30 spline, 1.3
shafts for it. That's what my tow rig has Thanks Dodge They just couldn't leave the kingpin design alone.
Dodge had to cut back & increase their profit
margin, so we pay for it I don't
know if that's true or not, I just hate to see the D60 dwindle down to 1/2 ton status I need a &
after that one.

I don't see why not, don't forget they also have that vacuum disconnect crap that needs to be cut out of the axle tube.

I was pretty psyced when mine needed ball joints, track bar, and stabilizer at 76k miles (right after I bought it). Of course, hardly anything in the front end is greasable, and then there's the designed-for-death-wobble steering linkage. I think the engineer that designed the front end of this truck came straight from Amtrack. Not that his brother that put the 4 3/4" blocks in the rear is much better.

Ford dana 60 front came with 30 spline inner axles in the drum brake brake version produced in 1974-through 75 and 1/2..The first version of the open knuckle ford 60 front produced in later 1/2 of 75-1977 used a 30 spline inner axle.In theses axles the outer axle is 19 spline. Both of these axles with the small inners are junk as the u-joints are small and the knuckles are weak.In 1978 ford began offerring the dana 60 front with 35 spline inners and 30 spline outers with king pins in the f-250 supercab and snow fighter. All chevy versions of the dana 60 front from 1977-1991 had 35 spline inners and 30 spline outers. All dodge 60 fronts used 35 spline inners and 30 spline outers until 94 ish when they switched to the smaller spline count as someone else has already pointed out. This is all according to the spicer catalog of front and rear axle kits...Save your money and get the stronger version of the ford 60...P.S. newer versions have ball joints which are weaker than the king pin style.Hope this helps.

oh by the way are there different types of steering u-joints for the 60?

I was quoted $32 for some and had heard that they would be more expensive.

am I supposed to be looking for a certain model?

thanks

You can get cheapo's for that price, but spicer joints are like $70 a pop!

Ford D60 fronts are 30-spline for low-pinion (77-older) and 35-spline for high-pinion (78-up). AFAIK, GM D60's are all 35 spline. Maybe somebody else knows for certain of variuos years of Dodge D60's.

I keep hearing that the balljoint knuckles are weaker than the old king pin ones. Who has actually broken a ball joint or knuckle on a newer 60?
