Had to booger up my english for the title.:flipoff2:

I'm looking for ideas for a stand/dolly that holds the engine by the mounts, at least partially, so you can start the engine, or at least work on the BACK of the engine easily.

I'm fabbing up an adapter from a Benz turbo-diesel to a Toy W56, so I need room to bring the two components together.

Any cool plans or pics of something like this? The search brought nothing.

Thanks.

I've never built one myself, but i've used plenty of them, some of them home built. They're nothing special, just some tubing welded together to fit the engine, a gauge cluster, and if you want to get fancy a radiator and fan setup, maybe something to hold the battery.

Here's one you can just buy...

I started a chebby 350 on a cheap ass autozone engine stand. It worked just fine.

We built one at the last shop I worked for breaking in new engines. Fairly simple frame built from 2x2 tubing. Had legs for the motor mounts and then used a manual trans bellhousing to that bolted to the cart near the gauge panel. Engine was about at chest level for easy tuning.

You can start on a regular engine stand but from your post I am thinking you are more concerned with access to the rear of the engine so you can put a trans on the back of it...

I have used store bought ones for an SBC but I doubt you can pick one up for your motor anywhere cheap. Just build a little stand for it that bolts to the mount pads.

When I took a welding class at the local community college, they had some carts set up with bellhousings, small gas tanks, and such where the motor could be run. It looked just like the one mudtoy67 put up. They looked pretty straightforward.

if you dont need to have a tranny mounted to it, the $25 auto parts store engine cradle sare fine to run for short tests, i didnt mount a rad to mine so i kept it to 5min absolutle max!! but i was just testing it not breaking a cam in or rings and such.
