: Jack Stands...

My jack stands are having feelings of inadequacy around the Mog. I am looking at doing some axle work and need to support the frame. It would be ideal to have some beefy BIG jack stands with a threaded height adjustment (instead of notches every half inch) to dial in the height I need.

Here is an idea, but I may have to fab up a better head style to fit the frame, but these are close to what I want…

Any ideas out there?

What about a good floor jack that can handle the weight and height of a Mog?? Where do I start looking?

Good link sceep!

I bought a set of the stands that I mentioned in the above link that Spawn_x told me about!

I have designed the mother of all jackstands...

2"-12 threaded rod, 2 1/2" OD 0.25 wall tubing, thrust bearings, and an completely adjustable tripod stand setup. The way I calculate it all, the limiting factor is the thrust bearings rated at a mere 30,000 lbs each... Stay tuned for some drawings and pics. MSC loves me right now. :)

I have a CAD drawing that I want to post here. These things look pretty good to me, but I thought I would share fo comments before I start machining, welding, and cutting steel... Any ideas on how to get a pic up here easily?

easy way is pay $20 a year to get a red star & be a board supporter, then you can upload to the site in your post.

otherwise get a free photo Host place like photo bucket & upload, then copy paste URL code in your post

OK - I will have to go get myself a red star.

BTW - Here is the military version of jack stands; http://cgi.govliquidation.com/auction/view?id=1456497&convertTo=USD

Here we go!

My main gripes with jack stands on the market is that they are n ot terribly adjustable (2" increments) and their general structure looks weak to me. Personally, I don't like the block approach, and the stamped sheet metal just doesn't meet my personal safety factor.

A quick pic of the CAD. The round shaft protruding from the top is 2-12 all thread. The top has thrust bearings to ensure easy movement (reduces friction for adjustments). The base is 2.5" OD 0.25" wall tubing. There are three legs with 3/4-10 bolts used to ensure level. All load should be brought straight through the shaft to the center base with a 4" hex. The three legs should not hold much of the weight, but maintain position.

Looks like the minimum height will be about 28 inches, and max should be 48 inches.

Let me know your thoughts!!

If the main weight is transferred straight through to the large hex head, would you not need a larger surface area to prevent sinkage on say tarmac?

Looking good though!

The pipe stands can be bought for around $45 each. Wouldn't it be easier/cheaper to just get those?

The contact patch for this design has just over 14 sq in in the base, and an additional 11.77 in the tripod setup. If the Mog were completely off the ground, each jack stand would hold about 2500 lbs. 2500 / 25 sq in = 100 psi. I am using these on a concrete floor, which is more than suitable.

Pipe stands would be cheaper, but again does not meet my personal factor of safety. All jack stands are rated for perpendicular load forces only. Side loading will collapse many sheet metal stands. Not that I think it owuld happen... but I am assured it won't with this design.

I guess so???

How much does a MOG weigh?

Most decent pipe stands are ~2500lbs, so figure 10,000lbs using 4 of them.

You can get the pipe stands with different heads on them. Typical is the V head since it's meant to hold pipe.

Simple to chop that off and weld on a piece of 1/4" C channel or buy stands that have a C head to begin with.

I know there are times you can fab something and make it better, or make it for cheaper, but in this case it seems to me that you are really just trying to re-invent the wheel. That design you made up doesn't seem to me that it'd be all that much stronger.

Pipe stands aren't made with sheetmetal. I know what you are talking about though with those $10 Kmart special stands
Go to the hardware store and take a look at a set of pipe stands before you spend all this time and $$ building some.

Not that much stronger? The CAD pic is to scale, but maybe you didn't read the dimensions in the description.

Each jack stand will weight a touch over 100 lbs... By my calculations, the limiting factor is the thrust bearings at 30,000 lbs each stand. That means that they could easily hold 120,000 lbs if I were so inclined.

Not trying to reinvent the wheel... Just trying to find a piece of equipment that it the right sive (height and heft) for what I want to do.

You are like my brother I swear!

He buys a engine stand from the gypsies (Cummings tools or whatever they are called) and the fucker folds up and about takes out his leg when he put a 351 on it.

So he builds one right... This thing could probably hold a Cummins N14

That is one hell of an engine stand!

I like your brother already and I don't even know him. :)
