southern k5 11-27-2007, 02:30 PM Im about to get an 07 dodge w/ 5.9liter cummins and on the fence about what tranny to get. I want the 6 speed, but I know my significant other wont be able to drive it (which might not be a bad thing, but I drink and she doesnt so shes my DD). And ill be in atlanta traffic, so Im also thinking about the auto and there close to me where ill have to drive about 150miles to get the 6speed. The thing also is I can get a little better deal on the auto. So my question is does any with the manual wish they got the auto, or anybody with the auto wish they got a manual? And im going to bomb the hell out of it :smokin:
mondtster 11-27-2007, 02:50 PM I *think* the 5.9L motors would still be equipped with the 4 speed automatic tranny and not the 6 speed automatic, correct?
If so, the general consensus on the Dodge 48re automatics is that they are pretty beefy and will hold a good amount of power with a valve body and torque converter upgrade. Everything does have its limits however so depending on what you mean by "bomb the hell out of it" you may or may not be ok with a stock or mostly stock tranny.
I've got an automatic in my truck and like it. I wouldn't be interested in trading for a manual tranny truck.

yep 48re 4speed, if it was the 6 speed auto id be all over it, but just the lack of gear choices bother me, I had a z71 one and HATE that fucking truck b/c of the auto, I guess that really why I want the manual
Erics76 11-27-2007, 04:56 PM The 48RE's are pretty tough. Much better than the 47's. My dad has a 05 2500 auto with an Edge EZ on it and he pulls about 18,000lbs of hay with it a few times a year without any problems so far. I've had 3 cummins and they've all been standards. I wouldn't have a truck that I'm hauling heavy with a auto. Lots of shifting with the 6 speed though. If you're really undecided and the auto is cheaper, get it. It'll have more trade in value.
mondtster 11-27-2007, 05:03 PM IMHO, you'd probably learn to hate rowing gears after a short period of time. Especially if you have to deal with stop and go traffic all the time. Manual vs. automatic transmissions can be debated forever and there will never be a clear answer. You're just going to need to decide what you want. The only thing that I can tell you is that the automatic will do what you want it to.
One thing you're forgetting about is that there is torque multiplication with the torque converter in an automatic. In theory, you don't need as many gears to get the same job done.
BTW - if you're planning on bombing the truck the automatic will most likely be quicker. I don't know if you're looking to race at all with it but take a good look at the majority of the race cars at a drag strip. They likely have some sort of automatic in them (except for the lencos and other similar trannys).
Trailduster79 11-28-2007, 06:53 AM I have an 02 with an auto. For daily driving I am glad I have the auto.
Just towed our camper to PA and back, about 7-8 hours, and there were times I wish I had the 5 speed instead of the auto.
I tried to find a 5 speed, but couldn't find one near me for what I wanted to pay for it.
dan58 11-28-2007, 07:57 AM I have an 02 manual (nv5600). Don't plan on winning any drag races with it. I'm sure the new 6-speed is a bit quicker on the shifts though. For traffic, the manual isn't bad. I drop mine to 1st gear and just roll. Not a big deal.
crashnzuk 11-28-2007, 01:26 PM If you want the stick, get it. Then teach you woman to drive it. The new trucks are cake to drive, they have tons of power and shift silky smooth. That is, if you're gonna use it like a truck. If you have any illusions that you will race it or sled pull with it, you'd most likely want an auto. Just don't come back in a few months bitchin that your auto sucks and what is involved in doing a manual swap mmmkay.:flipoff2:
Travis..
Mechanos 11-28-2007, 02:47 PM I wanted the 6sp manual when I was looking for a truck. I couldn't find one (used) anywhere around me and ended up getting one with the auto (47RE). I pulled my junk with all my gear, tools and spares out to CA and back through the Rockies without any problems, but I wasn't entire happy with it either. I now have a stoutly built auto (full DTT) and am more than happy with the way it performs. It now behaves like an auto should behave. There are time when I still wish I had the manual since I personally like driving manuals, but for the everyday commuting, etc. the auto is nice to have.
Munchies 11-28-2007, 02:59 PM Auto. If you dont like a manual in traffic, try one with a nasty clutch, which you will need when you bomb it.
the 48re is a fukin beast with only a few mods
Never Monday 11-28-2007, 03:43 PM I row a G56 in my 05. It's not bad because I start in third most of the time and use it as a 3 spd. 3, 4, then 6. If I were commuting into ATL everyday on 75, 85 or 400. I'd have to shoot myself or buy a Honda. Luckilly I stay on the edges of ATL
My 5.9 6spd has been bullet proof without bombs it's pulled a scaled weight of 15,600 at 70-75 getting 9mpg. I'm still on the original clutch at 136K.
From a stop I get spanked all day by the auto trucks. I just can't shift fast enough, BUT if it's a down hill start. Their toast cause I'm at 3K in 3rd and going for the next before they get thru the intersection.

No they aren't :D My 6 spd is great, but its not a drag truck... thats for sure. Honestly, it depends on what kinda money you have. For my money, I went with the 6 spd, and left it alone... My dad's got one thats the same year as mine, but a 3500 dually, and his is an auto. His auto took a dump on his, and he spent about 5k on a new BUILT trans. If you have the money to have the auto trans BUILT, then go auto. I love the way my dads drives now, and if I could justify getting rid of my 6 spd for a built auto, I would.

The 48re doesn't need to be built unless you really want to bomb the hell out of it. Get a good torque converter and a valve body and the rest of the parts in the 48re are pretty much the same as what you would get in a built automatic (except for billet shafts).
If in the event that you do burn it up they can be rebuilt in your garage with everything that the big boys use in their built automatics. There's nothing that special in them.

The biggest problem with the 48re is not the stock internal hard parts... it's the shitty seals. They internally bleed like a stuck pig.
Yes, the 47 and 48 are easily rebuilt in your garage. I rebuilt mine in my garage and it was the first auto I'd been into. You just need to pay close attention to cleanliness.
yotawheelers 11-30-2007, 12:23 PM save yourself the hassle and get the six speed manual, i have an auto and sometimes i wish i had a manual because i had to buy a new dunrite trans since i bombed my truck before the trans. and buying a new clutchis alot cheaper than a new trans.
