Duct tape falls somewhere in between the two if I remember correctly.:flipoff2:

What type of frame? are the sides angled? Or strait rails?

You're going to want to Z notch it, or whatever it's called, to get a longer weld area. I'd, personally, also sleeve it. If not, I like the bailing wire idea! :D

Strait rails, either sleeve it or plate it. cut the plates out of the same thickness material as the frame and make em a trapazoid so the weld line is not perpindicular to the frame. The idea is to spread the heat affected zone of the weld over a longer area of the frame so you dont have just one well defined area that may be weakened by the heat. If sleeving it, weld the but joint in the frame rails, and plug weld every so often to the sleeve. It wouldnt be a bad idea to make the frame cuts at a 45 or so if looking at the side so that when you make the butt weld it spreads the heat out over a longer area.

Or ya could just stick it together, zap it, and call it good.
