You bet. Open it up and look inside.. if the clutches are wavy, that's bad. If the bands are broken, that's bad.

If you can't tell the clutch friction discs from the clutch flat discs, that's bad..

Don't think so. Not without taking it apart, which is not too bad of a job, since the auto is out anyway. In fact, for the cost of parts, it is probably worth doing in any case, for insurance. 727 rebuild is a diy type project. Nothing complicated.

That being said, I am enough of a knucklehead that it has taken me several rebuilds to get mine right, and I won't know for a while still if this latest rebuild will hold, although it *seems* much better than after I rebuilt it last time...

You could at least drop the pan and see what is in the bottom. Also you can pull the valve body pretty easily and replace the shift lever column seals. You should do that anyway. If they have not been done, they will leak the week after you put it back in the truck. With the valve body out, you can eyeball the bands to see how much material is left on them. You can also tighten the bands while you are in there.

Lets see, you can shoot low pressure compressed air into the flow ports in the tranny body, and you should hear the clutch piston pop into position. That tells you you have a good seal on the pistons.

Don't know of any way to look at friction plates though, without taking the guts out. They are inside the drums. You can tell by smell if the pads are burnt though. Take some fluid to a *reputable* shop, or someone who knows auto trannies that you trust. You can tell a lot about what is going on in a tranny just from looking at and smelling the fluid.

If the friction disks are gone, it is really bad... ;) Don't ask how I know.... That was tranny number 3, or was it number 4? I am losing track...

But, you have to take it apart to get to the clutches, so you might as well rebuild it if you are going to that much trouble.

Chief,

Call a tranny shop and ask it they have a tranny dyno. Like an engine dyno, the can spin up the tranny and check pressure. Just tell them it's a 727, omit the IH part :D

Ditto what Joe said.

We've got a local shop that does it free, even the shops that charge are cheap..

Cool I thought those just checked pressure. Didn't realize they could dyno the plates, bands and such. Learned something new. :D :D :D

Garrett

Chrysler A-727/A904 Techtran Manual, revised edition.

ACT 12400
RPM tm1200trpm G41
Tech manual A727

There is a video that you can buy for $15 also, highly recommended.

Your local Napa or tranny shop should be able to order these for you.

Or, Snohomish Transmission, www.snohomishtransmission.com has them in stock, usually. Both the manual and the video.

That being said, the big binder manual in the auto tranny section is identical to this smaller manual. Word for word, picture for picture.

If your gears are in good shape, there is not much at all to replace.

Friction plates, new friction metal, if the old ones are warped/burred, two piston seals, two bands, two servo seals, front oil seal, some bushings, the springs and rollers in the rear sprag, that is about it. Some tolerance issues, but not much. Probably a couple other little things. Putting the clutch packs together requires a foot press. I paid the shop $10 to do mine. Saved me an hour, worth the $10. ;)

It really is not that complicated. Not sure how I keep screwing up.

But, week three on this tranny, and no hiccups. Past rebuild problems started hiccuping sooner than this, so, hopefully I got it right this time.
