: Started installing Atlas today...

So the day starts off great. When I went to take of my skid plate one of the allen head bolts gets stripped(ok my fault). Then when trying to take off the bolt next to it the welded nutsert in the frame lets go so I just have a bolt that is spinning in the frame. Went to town and got an airchisel and got the one bolt out and then cut the other with the sawsall. What fun. So now the Tcase is out and I'm doing a clutch at the same time and I come to find out that the two bellhousing bolts on top require reverse torx sockets. Sweet! Getting that from a buddy in the morning and picking it up from there.:D

Have FUN!

You may think the Atlas is one of the best things you did, I thought so; I love the twin stick!:D

Now you can cruise back to Spider in 2 LOW for about 95% of the trail!:D

Ding, ding, ding!

No shit on those stupid bolts. I have the same on my 97XJ bellhousing. I bought a set of the reverse torx bits and ended up using a 6 point 3/8" (or 7/6s) and kind of pounding it on there to get those bolts off. They promptly went into the garbage and replaced with standard hex bolts. WTF was Jeep thinking? Are the torx heads that much stronger? Does it make assemply of the vehicle on the line .06 seconds faster thereby saving $29.34 a year in manufacturing costs? Or is is an evil conspiracy by Jeep to make sure we don't work on our own vehicles and thereby increasing service revenue.

Beelzebub has a devil set aside for the guy that invented Torx!

Who me? Bitter?

Good luck with the install. I'll be there in the next 12 months.

I'm right there with ya on that whole reverse Torx bolt bullshit, the automakers have this policy, "Let's not make it better, let's just make it different" and then their buddies at Snap-on say, hey, we can't sell any of these $80 five socket strips of these screwed up style sockets, why don't you guys use these useless bolts and we'll all skip our way hand in hand to the bank at the cost of all them schlubs that work on their own shit. Yup, I bought those firggin sockets to change my starter, the sockets cost more that the starter.

Now that I have the sockets, I wish I could buy those bolts somewhere, I'd use them on everything, then my buddies couldn't borrow stuff off my Jeep when I'm out of town.

Yeah but that did not help. Just fawked up the head a little. Got the reverse Torx socket and had to hammer it on and then I got it. But not with out a little blood.;)

Say it with me folks "Aircraft bolts" not reverse torx bolts. Any good tool set (craftsman anyway) comes with the most common sizes of aircraft bolts.

you could have saved $80 and spent maybe $20 on 12 pt sockets

I'm not talking about twelve point bolts, I'm talking about a bolt with a head that looks just like a Torx bit, as in you could use this bolt as a Torx bit, it's called an external Torx, and the sizes are coded E10, E12, etc. I don't know what kind of aircraft they come on but apparently the airplane manufacturers are in bed with the auto manufacturers and the tool makers too. A twelve point will get one off if it's finger tight, but anything more and it's going to be screwed up. I see Craftsman now sells external Torx socket sets for $19.99, my local Craftsman dealer never heard of them, I had to buy them from the Snap-on Guy for like $79, okay it sucks to be me, I should have just bought the one size I needed for $9, since I haven't seen any more of those bolts anywhere, but I like to buy new tools, even if they're useless.

Hey newbie, know your role. Those of us that recommended 12 point sockets know exactly what we are talking about. I have removed the same bolts TJpwr originally spoke of just fine with a snug fitting 12 pt socket. Did you read that, I said SNUG.

And if your sorry ass got taken for a useless $80 tool, you are what you bought ... a useless tool. Now take your "let me school these guys on the alpha numeric designations of inverted torx bolts" ass elsewhere. You have nothing new to add.

I took the first one out with a twelve point as well, but the other got so f'ed up that the E12 had to be hammered on, I got the impression some folks thought we were talking about those 12 point headed bolts that some headers come with, so I thought I clear that up, I wasn't trying to school anybody, and the whole point is that those bolts are stupid, so is the tool you need to get them off in one piece, and apparently so am I for buying that tool. I think in the future all the bolts on new vehicles will look like those McGuard lug nuts, and you'll need a different key for every damn one so shlubs like us won't work on our own junk.

My '95 Yuppie Junk is the newest thing I'll ever own. From now on, only vehicles with real steel and ignition keys in the dash, or no keys at all. At least 25yrs old. My '46 Willy's costs $38 / year for full coverage insurance with an appraised value of $5000, and that's $50 deductables, plus I can dissassemble the whole thing with three wrenches and a screwdriver, old shit is cool! The only dumb thing on it is the silly backwards lugnuts on one side, what were they thinking?

A twelve pt bolt and a torx are not the same.

12 pk sockets will work if it's not torqed to hell.(like said above)

On Roxy's YJ we got one out with a 12 pt 7\16 no problem, but the second one got striped, and can't get it off now even with the correct torx socket.

:flipoff: torx bolts

Nothing like a blue-nosed bolt eraser to make things easy, or make a big mess out of a little problem (fire bad, fire very bad)

reverse threads on the willys is classic. I had three guys jumping on a breaker bar trying to get one of those off. The old man came out and said "hey I think those are reversed threads"

oops

Yeah, I've seen the same thing on several old cars, and when I say right hand thread, they look at me like I'm smoking crack, then I spin one off and half the time show them that the lug nut says "1/2" RH" on it. The story I got is that the auto makers used to think that the gyroscopic forces on the wheel during forward travel would unthread the lug nuts it they were threaded the same direction. My VW sandrail has the same thing, only with lug bolts, so did my buddy's '52 Plymouth. My Willy's had the studs all mixed up when I got it, three wrong hander's on the wrong side, could be a great anti-theft measure.

A versitapper is an adapter you put in your drill press that allows you to drive thread taps in both forward and reverse directions...comes in handy for machining precision threads and won't harm your work piece..:D

It's going. The case and tranny are in. It's clocked all the way up after I "modified" the tub with my BFH. I'm going to tackle the shifters and tranny mount tomorrow.
