Do these engines use piston sleeves, or when you rebuild them, is your only option to bore the pistons out? My uncle tells me they are not rebuildable, but I don't believe him...

And, ah, is anyone looking to sell an OM-617.952 by any chance? :D That's the turbo version. I'd rather not get a whole car for parts, but I guess if the price is low enough, why not...

So not to assume anything I'm guessing you mean that this is a 300 turbo Diesel your speaking of.

Absolutely correct. I believe they were used from 1982-1987 in 300 turbo series. Sorry, should've had that in my original post...

Thanks, Coachgeo!

Lotsa good stuff to read on those sites. Guess I better start reading, even though it's Friday and that's an awful lot like work... :rasta:

Why? Are they that much of a PITA to work on? Ever worked on an Isuzu 4BD1T? How do they compare?

Slowly gathering information for my swap...

I work at the dealer, usually when one of these, a diesel, comes in, it's a pig- theyre actualy pretty easy to work on- and pretty stout- if your looking for one make sure to pull the #1 injector and check for excessive oil- these have a habit of blowing the headgasket and sometimes cracking the head between #1 and #2- then they load the exhaust full of oil- you'll know it when you see it- they are rebuildable, usually when this happens we stuff a factory rebuild in- usually about $4k in parts- :trooper:

Thanks Trooper! I have filed that information in my truck notebook. I'm gathering info on what to look for when I find a potential engine, and yours is very helpful!

So a factory-rebuilt engine is about $4K? That sounds similar to a rebuilt Isuzu 4BD1T. I'm hoping for far cheaper, of course. :D
