Yes and no, you need to make sure the bull gear matches the gear set in the T-case. Go to Novak's sit and look up the information.

I think that the Auto tranny bull gears are the issue ones.

The Manuals don't seem to have this problem. (At least, every 20 I have bolted on never had issues with having to change the bull gear)

The gear set in the late model Heep should work with the IH bull. Check the Novak site for the info. Ben or Old Scout provided the link a while back.

Just swap it in. Only a few oddball Dana 20s have the strange pitch.. some J20 crap according to Novak.. 90% of the Dana 20s out there will bolt up, no problems.

In particular, the CJ D20 will.

The one I just pulled from the junkyard is probably a CJ t'case - it has something attached to the unused (in a Scout) ear on the passenger side that I'm about to cut off tonight..

And it's going behind my 727. I do NOT plan on swapping guts tonight.. :flipoff: that.. I'll go buy another one first.

The only thing I'm going to swap is a yoke onto the rear output.. it's missing one. :D

LOL. Just in response to you saying you would just swap guts from one D20 to the other..

Remarking that I plan on just stuffing the 'case I just bought on and calling it a night. I really don't expect needing to swap guts around at all - and I don't think you'll have any problems in that regard, either.

IIRC there is a difference in the shifters also. I think the Jeep one sits foreward-away from the case a bit more. Perhaps not a issue.:)

There were a couple at the junkyard yesterday like that.

Looked to me like it used the same shift-rails as a SII, but had longer extensions bolted to the stock shift rails to move the shifter forward.

I figured I could easily move the shifter back to the Scout location w/o any trouble.

I didn't look to see that the front bearing retainer had the correct pivot mount for the SII shifter though..

Not that I don't have a dozen of the correct retainers here.. *sigh*

hey tsm1mt, I'll be up in billings in august to bring my brother a scout body and a bunch of chev shit, do you want that 20 I have, or just throw it away?

Harkinoff - if the price is right, I'm usually buying. :)

I have a line on a couple coming already.. but don't throw it away, anyhow. I'm short a few as it stands (been robbing otherwise complete parts rigs.. <G> )

I'll be racing in Billings on 9/14-9/15.. maybe you could hold off on your trip? :-)

I'm not planning any trips that far east in August.. in fact, August is pretty dry looking for me.. no races anywhere, so maybe we'll take a little vacation to Glacier..

Billings is 240-250 miles from here..

and who imports good bodies to Montana?? Should be plenty to be found up here already! :)

you can have the 20, he needs a hood, and the imported body is mine from salt lake, bringing it to him to fix, no good bodys down here:p

Check this chart and make sure the gear pitch on the bull gear matches the rest of the gears

http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/transfer_case_gears_grid.htm

The jeep cases usually don't have the pivot for the scout style shifters, but I think you can just swap on a front bearing retainer of a Scout and use the Scout shifters. Personally, I'd twin stick it.
