: Dumbass!!!!!!!!
MossMan 06-26-2002, 08:38 AM Get this. I was just on the phone with the stealership here trying to get some parts. lol. I need the pads that go on the range shift fork in my np231 which is out of my '87 YJ. So I ask the if he has it or can get it. He fumbles around with his books/computer for several minutes. In the meantime I've got the part pulled up on 4wd.com already cause i'm getting frustrated. Then the guy asks me if i'm sure it's a np231. he said that is an oddball t-case to come from a wrangler. wtf. he asked me 3 more times if i'm sure and tells me that most of them came with a 207 or 208. maybe some did but a 231 certainly isn't uncommon. what a dumbass. i hate it when i have to resort to dealing with these guys.
Keith Strong 06-26-2002, 08:42 AM WOW! That doesnt surprise me, but it kinda does. I can see the confusion of NV 231 vs NP 231 (Like JP Magazine always does) but damn.....a 207/8?
4Bangler 06-26-2002, 08:47 AM Actually, '87 Wrangers came with 207's it was the only year for them, his silly dealership computer is right for a change. Does your 231's tag have a 1987 date on it? I would bet that it's not original to your Jeep. I assume you're sure it's a 231, tell the tool at the stealership (I like that one) it's a '93 to avoid confusion
bigdude 06-26-2002, 08:50 AM 207s also came in Cherokees that year. I find 'em all the time in the pic n' pulls. They're the ones people don't ever mess with :D

My '87 came (stock) with a 231 as well... That's what I always do too--Tell them it's newer to avoid the confusion of parts monkeys who won't believe anything but what's on/in the monitor/parts book in front of them...
4Bangler 06-26-2002, 10:21 AM The guy at Pep boys told me that he couldn't sell me a t-case tailshaft seal without knowing whether or not my YJ had A/C....I'm wondering when the parts finder programs are going to promt for vehicle color, that's important when you're trying to get the right tie rod end. The parts guy hates when I come in, I just walk behind the counter and help myself cuz I hate explaining every time, "it's a '95 Jeep, with an '81 front axle, a '67 rear, '64 trans, '78 Ford hubs, '79 Chevy brakes, yada, yada, yada, what part of 297-X U-joint don't you understand?"

i also ran into the same prob at Pep Boys, i went to get a seal for the old slip yoke and he wanted to know if i had AC, he got mad at me and walked away when i asked him "Why in the frick would you want to know anything about my AC (that i dont have) to give me a part for my transfer case" needless to say i didnt get the part there:mad2:
IndyCJ 06-26-2002, 11:54 AM I've found that by going to Carparts.com or some such website (wrenchhead.com maybe too) and finding the part number of what I need, and then going into PepGirls, Autobone, the like and asking them for that particular part number, they don't ask me those silly questions.
Saves me a lot of frustration.
Steven_Mc 06-26-2002, 12:24 PM I've tried giving the monkeys at autobone the part number and they still insist on knowing what year, make, model vehicle I'm dealing with. Not to mention they claim they don't have anyway to search by part number to see if they have the part in stock.
Every time I go in their I get these looks like I must own a freakin car lot full of cars that I'm constantly working on... Idiots!
:flipoff2:

GOD I FUCKING HATE THAT! :mad3: :mad3:
Autobone did it to me again today, they wanted the VIN and COLOR  of my caddy to give me the fuel filter  :mad3: (check their site as if you were looking for the Dodge TREs for a YJ,XJ,ZJ,TJ swap. It will want to know color and VIN)
Then they proceded to give me the air filter, fucking dumbasses :mad3:
4Bangler 06-26-2002, 12:58 PM I had to go to a Autozone in the middle of nowhere to get some wheel studs for my buddy's Chevy pickup after his right front 35" BFG passed him up on the freeway. I knew they were 1/2" wheel studs and it was an '87 Chevy 1/2 ton. The Dillhole behind the counter looked them up, and came back with a small Dorman box marked 7/16 on the end. I told him that I needed 1/2" He said "what year truck would have had 1/2" studs on it?" I resisted the urge to smack him and argued for the next ten minutes that he could go back to the shelf he got the first box off of and grab the next box over that said 1/2" on the end. After we got all that straightened around, the dipshit tried to sell me 7/16 lug nuts. Doh!

As far as I know NV (or NVG) - New Venture Gear and NP - New Process are one in the same. Gotta love useless info. :D

Saw one at Hayward Pick your Part in November last year, went back in March and it was still there!

whitefro 06-27-2002, 02:39 AM what type of cases are the 207-8? fulltime, partime? spline? whats so bad about these?
4Bangler 06-27-2002, 05:17 AM The 207/208 are very similar to the 231/241, part time, chain drive, aluminium, but with a narrower chain than the 231. Nothing really wrong with them, they came in full-size trucks and held up okay, but there are no aftermarket goodies for them ie: SYE kits, etc.
YJ4RoX 06-27-2002, 06:10 AM I am convinced everyone at auto parts stores are retards.
When i was building my Waggy 44 i needed the front axle seals. Well i made the mistake of going to advance auto(MossMan knows the on). I tell the guy i need front inner axle seals for a 81 Jeep grand Wagoneer. He fumbles through the computer & said
"Does your Transfer case have a fixed or slip yoke?"
me:"what makes the difference what tcase i have?
Is it an auto or manual?
No clue I got it at the yard?
Well i need to know so i can get the right seal.
Well i turn the monitor around and the FukTard is looking for a Tcase output seal. i was like WTF does that have to do with my front axle? Then he tries to sell me spindle bearing seals. AHHHH finally he gave me a set of seals, he was convinced they were correct. I looked at them closely & said nope, not the right ones. The OD was much to small. (The were D44 rear axle seals.) I went to a real auto parts store & the guy ordered teh correct ones.
I dont even deal with Advanced anymore. Bunch of fucking morons. They cant understand that because my Jeep is a 91, that i need parts from 81 waggy, 78 scout II(really confuses them, not many scouts left in WV), 79 Ford, etc.......
4Bangler 06-27-2002, 06:56 AM Plus, in '81 there were three different inner axle seals for the Jeep Dana 44, some took one size, some took another, and some, like mine, took one size on one side, and a completely different one on the other, that time the parts guy taught me something, cuz I said, "Naw, they's all da same" Nope, he listed three different sizes, I bought two of each, installed the right ones (which looked nothing like the old ones) and returned the rest. They're not all we todd did, some of them are sofa king we todd did, but some of them know their shiznit.
chumly2071 07-01-2002, 09:44 AM I guess I'm lucky. A good friend of mine is a parts guy at a Napa, and he helps to cross stuff for me all the time. Matter of fact, sometimes HE calls ME to figure out what he needs :) gotta love it !!
Sundowner 07-01-2002, 09:47 AM Plus, in '81 there were three different inner axle seals for the Jeep Dana 44
Evidence of the bastard lineage of Jeep. We had an axle in a while back that used seals that were SUPPOSED to be specific to Ford High Pinions, but there they were, in a stock waggy axle.
(PSSST! hey Rob, that was your axle:D )
MossMan 07-01-2002, 01:44 PM I knew I wasn't the only one. I almost couldn't believe it, but i have found a guy at the parts store (NAPA) that actually knows his shit and understands why i need parts from so many different things. i have talked this guy enough now that he knows my situation and more importantly, he seems like he has installed or at least seen some parts before. and to beat it all he has even built a few jeeps himself. :D this dude is the man and has made my parts finding jobs 100% easier. YJ4Rox, go to the NAPA in Hurricane and talk to Chris. He's the dude with the glasses and pony tail. HE KNOWS HIS SHIT!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Are you sure about the chain? I thought they were similar. The main difference I know of is the 231/241 used an oil pump for lubrication, whereas the 207/208 relied on splash. Other than that, they're basically the same. Nothing crosses over though, can't use 231 goodies on you 207 or 241 goodies on your 208.
4Bangler 07-01-2002, 03:33 PM Yeah, you're right on the oiling, the 207/208 was a slinger, where the 231/241 has a pump. I think the chain is a little narrower, possibley inconsequential
PooterXJ 07-01-2002, 03:44 PM Yeah I worked for O'Reilly Auto Parts for about a year and got tired of all the dipshits from pepfags and autoexchange who go to look up a radiator for a VW bug with an AIR cooled engine. friggin stupid shits. Half their customers were sent to us or they came and got parts from us cus they have no inventory. The only thing I liked about my job was having all my repeat 4x4 customers. I could understand the modifications most were doing.
anyway, Napa or O'reilly's or even bumper2bumper are the only ones I deal with.
