: Toy diesel in a Sammy?
dieseltoy 06-26-2002, 11:26 AM I have an extra Toy 2.2L diesel motor, and am thinking about putting it in a sammy with toy trannie and axles. Since the size of the engine and the motor mounts are the same as a 22R, it should be fairly straightforward. If anyone has used a 22R (or toy diesel motor) in a sammy, I would be interested in hearing about the instalation. Also, if there were any problems using the R151F trans, because of drive shaft length.
Thanks for any help.

StomperZUK 06-26-2002, 12:22 PM dieseltoy,
I know of a fellow from the topica zuk email list in WA state, J. Thomas Bentzen, that has a complete 2.4L toy diesel setup installed in a LWB samurai. I know it's not the 2.2L, but he seems pretty knowledgable about the toy diesel stuff. Here is a link to a few pics of his rig.http://briefcase.yahoo.com/jt_bentzen
You can email him at: jt_bentzen@yahoo.com
My brother has a 1L (2.2 Liter) toyota Diesel in his LJ80....while it is "tight" around the engine..... it does fit ....... as far as the R151 goes....... with a single t-case yes it will fit..... if you want to run a dual case you might think about stretching out the wheelbase a bit........
OCNORB 06-26-2002, 09:36 PM I am a newbie here , but I've been wheeelin zuks since I bought my first one in '88. I just picked up a '90 with no motor or trans and i am intrigued with using a diesel motor, but I would like to hear some feedback about drivability from someone that has used one in a zuk. Any other suggestions for motor trans combo would be appreciated. I would prefer an automatic and I am not concerned with length too much as I will be extending the wheel base to around 100". Has anyone seen this beauty on ebay- looks like the perfect setup!!- http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1838661675

Erik Dossett 06-27-2002, 10:07 PM I have the Keltec/VW kit with a VW 1.9 turbo diesel. I love it. There are a few others on this board who have VWs as well. If someone has a place to post a video, I can put up a about a 3.5 meg/3 and half minute of my rig idling around my property in low range, 31's, stock gears, over some little obstacles. It really works well. The torque right at idle is where it really shines.
OCNORB 06-28-2002, 03:58 PM hey eric - How is it when you need acceleration and wheelspin? I guess I'm worried that I won't be able to clean the tires in gooey mud. Any insight here would be great.
My brother says he knows a guy selling a vw rabbit diesel - don't know which motor yet.
Rocky Road 06-28-2002, 06:26 PM Tom doesn't count though...... with enough money, anything can be accomplished ;)
Just kidding Tom ole boy :)
Erik Dossett 06-29-2002, 11:09 AM Well, I get to use 2nd lo now. The wheel speed when I spin the motor to 3-4000 rpm gets pretty high. I would think the turbo helps greatly here, but I get things going at too low an rpm for the turbo to be the only reason I can spin the tire. I can spin my mud terrains easily, the 31x15.5 Terra Traks kind of build up and then cut loose and spin, but they really hook up in mud pretty well in the first place. The time I forgot to lock the hubs I was a bit slow getting through the muck, tho'.
I am not sure how the diesel would do with stock gears and 33 or 35 Boggers, but I think if you had a turbo and right gears you could do alright. Really, depends on the mud, too. The ultimate mud machine might be the rotary, good low end and kick butt high rpm power.

How hard was the Kit to install? I have rebuilt my 1st wimpy 1.3L stock Samurai motor 3 times. Runs Fine now, but am on my second engine. I figure that when this one goes, I'm not puttin another one of these POS in again. It'll be diesel time.
Erik Dossett 07-02-2002, 08:45 AM Well........I have a hard time coming up with an answer. I was one of the early buyers of the Keltec kit, but by the time I got it installed, they were no longer in the busines :D
Wife, kids, job, they are such annoying distractions. It sat over a year.I know another guy who bought a kit, installed a 1.6 td ( which more of the kit worked with, I ended up ditching a lot of mine ) and he said it took him about 40 hours work - your mileage may vary. For me, I had to modify motor mounts to clear the oil cooler, Keltec had supplied me with a different filter mount to clear the filter/cooler better but it didn't work with the 1.9, it only was for the 1.6. I also had to put on a remote oil filter mount as well. I moved the radiator back a little and mounted a cooling fan in push mode - but if you had a thinner fan it would work in the standard position. Really, compared to a lot of work I see done on this list, it's a bolt-in. Even the fuel system was pretty easy. A couple mods to the tranny, getting ahold of a Geo Storm with/auto trans starter, yadda-yadda. I am looking at a major revamp - going toyota tranny, t-case, axles - and would be selling my whole kit at that time - keep an eye out ;) . I have also seen new "mini" kits out there - just an adapter plate, no motor mounts, use the Zuk flywheel somehow, much much cheaper, might be better for those who are more DIY - my kit ended up pretty DIY anyway.
