when using DANA gears they have a number on the pinion head that tells how far from "standard" they need to be set up. (+/- .00?) aftermarket gears have the actual depth scribed on them that they should be set at. What is "standard" pinion depth? Can't find anyhting on the 'net that says.

A friend and I just set up one 60 and are in the middle of another. The r&p tech at 4Wheelers told me 45/thousands of shims is usually a pretty good starting point for pinion depth.

He was darn close. I think I ended up at 42/thousands on the rear. Hope this helps.

I need an exact dimension. like 3.125" or whatever.

So THATīS what that fawking number is?!?!?!? I was thinking all this time that it was somehow directly related to the pinion depth and could not get it to work out with anything, either in Imperial or metric units...

IIRC it actually is 3.125". But I don't have my manual with me to confirm that depth.

Ah, I misread your question. Still, 45/thousandths shim depth is a good starting point if you don't get the answer you're looking for. To the best of my knowledge, the scribed marks rarely give an accurate pinion depth, they're more of a guideline. One way or the other, you'll probably add or subtract shims at least a couple times until you get the depth correct.

One way or the other, good luck.
