the new stlye Oem dana 44 joint features a forged cross - .020 smaller cross dimention but being forged it may not be an issue, the caps are thicker and neeldes are larger - any one runing these joints yet? Jess

so if the cross is smaller, the caps and needles are larger(meaning the "posts" must be smaller) do you think this will be a stronger joint?? will the forging make it better even though its a bit smaller??

onetoncv
10-31-2001, 12:48 PM
well the cross is actaully .020 wider span on top of that- its time to find a guy with a problem rig and let him rip it up and see how thigs hold-

So, how much do they go for? same as a 297?

Some friends of mine have tested these and found them to start at about 20% stronger and go up into the mid 30% range. They said that they noticed a wider spread of when they broke compared to the 297x, but at least they showed being stronger. I just recieved mine today and they look like the old-old 297 with the exception of the cross. They have the old style reinforced grease seal and the shorter needles. The cross definately has a better looking grain structure to it. I guess we will see what happens with these.

OK, who bought up all the 760 joints in North America? There are none to be had?
Last year someone picked up 3000 pieces and there are none left. Who has the stash man?

Well I got mine from a local drive line shop, thay have a bunch of um on the shelf, I saw um myself, in fact I watched my wife put um on the shelf But they are available to the public like any other part. I know there was some delay in shipping, but the shop finally got them in about 12 weeks ago. I would bet you could get them from a larger place, like Six States. Price should be within a $ or two of the 5-297, and cheaper than a 5-297-1x. Or heck if the price is right, I have a few extra as spares, I can dig um out of the trail box and....ohh never mind, bad idea

It is a direct replacment for the 5-297 and 5-297-1x. So anything that uses that joint can use the 5-760. Dana 44 in a 1/2 ton ford or a D44 in a jeep are the most common I can think of.

I have no idea if the OEM's are using this particular PN on there vehicles. Spicer is producing the Snaptight design in many diferent joints. What is being produced today that has a Dana 44 ? I can check that, but not look up a PN and cross it to what vehicles it came in.

wasn't the 5-297 center section forged too?

what I hear is the 297's that were made a year ago by spicer were the best joint out, then the quality went to shit, and this is their answer for replacing the bad quality with a better seal, thats all,

so are they stronger? why?

The current 5-297 and 5-297-1x are cast

The 5-760 is forged and has a new seal desgn over the non lube 5-297

Is it stronger, damned if I know.

Quality? Well, I've been told from a spicer dealer (take it for what it's worth second, now third hand) that for a while there Spicer was not making the 5-297, but outsourcing them from another maker (Neapco I believe) and quality was an issue, not as good... But I understand now that the 5-297 is again being produced by Spicer, and quality should be back at what it was.. True? the folks that told me, believe it is. You decide.

Not a replacment, but an addition. This according to this really cute woman that orders um at my local drive line shop. She can still order the 5-297, 5-297-1x and as of a few months ago, the 5-760. I think your shop is either misinformed, of just unaware.

that sounds strange to me, cause I thought that neapco made a better non greasable joint than spicer or anyone for that matter.

My driveline guy told me the same thing about Neapco making the spicer joints for a while and had to quit becaus of quality problems

Butch
11-06-2001, 08:22 AM
Their problem with Neapco was they were attempting to cast the cross to dimension instead of machining it to dimension after casting. The cast was not smooth enough and the needle bearing were digging into the cross. Spicer went back to cast and machining the cross:p

Just talked to a guy at DTD. His take, says he from talking to Spicer guys-
The 5-760 is a replacement for the 297-x. The 297x will be phased out.
There is no major change to the joint strength wise. Spicer changed the caps and seals (supposedly better).
Not worth swapping unless the 297x you got is going anyway.
For what its worth....

Im just going to hold off and get some CTM joints and new warn or moser shafts. That outa be a pretty beefy combo. Still waiting to find out a definite price on CTM's though.

Left is 760 right is 297. Inside hole smaller on 760, more steel in the posts. Caps are the same, bearings are the same.

Interesting, the picture posted by Watts is a different style 297. The ones I have look like the picture posted by onetoncv. Anyone know the difference? My 297 has smaller bearings, larger trunion bearing surface, slightly thicker caps (~.01) and larger c-clips than the new joint.
I have a picture to post, but since I'm a new guy here I'm not allowed.... E-mail me if you would like to see it. If anyone is interested, I can repost exact dimensions.
I just blew up an old 297 in my Samurai. I just replaced it with the 760, so we will see how it lasts.
