: 75:1 with 42s?
road1will 06-26-2002, 12:30 PM how badly will i be wanting lower gears? this setup would have to last me until mid-december with a very, very, very wimpy 4cyl.
i know that i should have lower gears and a bigger motor with 42s, but will it work at all for maybe 5 or 6 wheeling runs?
thanks
Keith Strong 06-26-2002, 12:55 PM I have 98:1 with 38's and a 6 cyl and I want deeper.....FWIW
bigdude 06-26-2002, 12:59 PM I'm there with 38's and an automatic. Wish it was a hair lower. I wouldn't want it with 42's:eek:
The Jerk 06-26-2002, 12:59 PM this is exactly what i run, but i also have a healthy v-8 to help it out and propane. i think it does great and i have no problems even with an open front. i will regear only because i want a front arb and the break is 4.10-4.56 so i might as well re gear it when its apart. jiMMy
wngrog 06-26-2002, 01:05 PM I think you could get away with it if you were running a torquey 6cly, but with a 4 cyl you are going to be HURTING!
I ran 97:1 and the torque monster 6cyl in my Cruiser before the LT-1 and auto and it was just right...any lower and I would have been in sad shape.
Rudezuk 06-26-2002, 01:06 PM I used to be at 84:1 when i had 33's......it was pretty damn good there......Now im 120:1 with 37's and that is closer to what you need!
I tried the 84:1 when i put the 37's on and hated it!!
road1will 06-26-2002, 01:10 PM ok, ill have to look at some way to do a quick and cheap dual transfer then. cause i can see it now, 60hp and 100lb ft of torque with 75:1 and 42s is gonna suck!
also, that 75:1 was with 7.17s in the axles, which i know wouldnt be a problem with teh 4cyl, but once i go to a 454 and 465, i would be worried about the pinions!
The Jerk 06-26-2002, 01:27 PM im putting 6.17's in mine and calling it a day with front and rear arbs! jiMMy
My plans will put me at 64:1 w/ 42's
- 4.3L V6
- TH350 (2.52 first)
- Toyota dual cases (2.28x2.28)
- 4.88's in the axles
If it was 63:1 with a manual I would be worried, but with an auto - I think I will be just fine :cool2:

Wifey ran our truck through 2' deep mud over the weekend in 3rd gear, low - that's a 10:1 "crawl ratio". I think you're gonna be JUST fine at 63:1 ;)

Slagburn 06-26-2002, 05:50 PM I'm at 63:1 :gack: with a manual and 39.5's. For now.
The clutch, it don't like me too much...
KAcrawler 06-26-2002, 06:01 PM face it, it is going to suck. you jumped the gun and bought bigger tires now you have to pay the piper. regear or you will hate yourself. oh and i wouldn't run 7.17's or even 6.17's i have seen the pinions and they look like they came from a zook!
Hayraker 06-26-2002, 06:24 PM rebuilding mine now, it will be at 60:1
6.17's
345 v8
TF727
Dana 20
divorced Rockwell +- 2:1
42 TSL's
I would go lower if there was a way to do it for cheap, but I haven't found it yet. I think I will be fine with 60:1 with the 345 and the auto. Hell, I've been trudging along on 33's at 17:1, not too good for the tranny and brakes but it would still get it:D
Gordon 06-26-2002, 06:36 PM Just do it. no it is not perfect but you said 5 or 6 runs, and that is probably how long your clutch will last, but since it is getting replaced go for it. Driving a setup that sucks is a good learning experience, so go out and play.
High5 06-26-2002, 07:00 PM heck i am only at 42.9to1 with my 42's and i don't have a problem. i run a 99 vortec350, th400, atlas 3.8, and 4.56's. since i have gone to 42's i would not mind a set of 5.13's but it does work pretty good now. of coarse the v8 and auto help that alot.

trust me i know. i was just saying. chris who ran 80to1 with a 4cylinder with only 36's and it didn't like the rocks. it was doable but not much crawling going on. i can't imagine it with 42's.

You know, after my previous setup of a 4 popper, 5 speed, and 100:1, I feel better after hearing you say you run a similar setup to what I mentioned above after I am done with my truck.
Reassuring, to say the least ;)

Step away from the keyboard and go outside. Turn wrenches for a week and keep away from the internet. You will be done with your rig. post us some pics when you are.
Just make up your mind and finish it!!!!!
Ron
PS found you a series salisbury if you are still in need (42s need not apply :) ) email me (PM sucks since lance disabled yahoo accounts)

I don't know about 42's..... but my 4 cyl. with the 36" boggers and 4:88 gears, 4:1 t/c lows , at about 80+ :1 does fine.
I just moved up to 38x14.5's and It'll work.
But....... I'll be puttin' in the dual case August timeframe......in time for Frostoberfest..... :D

When I went from 38's to 42's at 97:1, I felt it big time!
42's are big. He's gonna eat some serious clutch!
44Runner 06-27-2002, 08:40 AM with my 32's I am roughly 40:1 (manual), after the summer when i get the dual in and regear the axle i will be at 102:1 with 35's, I hope I will like it. Currently I feel like I am drag racing in low...
BnTMike 06-27-2002, 08:49 AM My EB with 44's on it was 68.1.. but it had a 460 in it so it was plenty slow..
My sami is 108.1 with a stock 1.3 and 37's and um well
SUCKS!!! its all throttle and bounce!!!
So get the 42's and gear reduction at the same time...
Mike-
Jakesteramalamajama 06-27-2002, 10:15 AM I can smell your clutch burning already... :flipoff2:
moveaside 06-27-2002, 08:32 PM I think the guy gets the running theme put the money in the gearing before you go and blow a lot on 42's. Too bad you already did. Even as a newbie I can't think of a better thing to improve than gearing best mod I've done so far. I'd work on that next. And why does it only need to last until Dec? You haven't even used fifth gear in awhile huh?
