: Bronco Tranny upgrades?
Really Sick Rigs 06-26-2002, 01:47 PM After towing my rig and trailer with my '90 Bronco XLT it decided to spew its tranny fluid out the front. I think its the E40D since its the auto-overdrive tranny but I'm not positive. Does anyone know where to get upgrades for the tranny like different front seals or external coolers or ??? stronger transmissions?
rokcrln 06-26-2002, 02:25 PM Call and talk to Jim at ATO at in rancho cordova he should have all the info you need and he can build you a bad a$$ tranny if you want to go that rought.
welndmn 06-26-2002, 02:43 PM Just get a big ass cooler from any auto parts store
Do you have the 302 or 351? For a '90 w/OD the 302 will have the AOD while the 351 will have the E4OD. Also if E4OD '90 will have the OD cancel switch on the lower right dash.
I don't think seals are gonna help you, sounds like the tranny is overheating. A cooler could help, if it doesn't you're probably just due for a rebuild.
Here's the B&M stacked plate cooler installed in my '90 Bronco w/E4OD:

Will give the EEC fits.
saf-t scissors 06-27-2002, 09:31 AM Yeah, and even if you replaced the EEC and sorted out all the wiring differences, the cash outlay is pretty substantial. You'd pretty much need a donor truck of the same MY to grab all the small parts, brackets, and harnesses.
With all the work and cash involved, you could build a damn nice E4OD.
Really Sick Rigs 06-28-2002, 10:03 AM I have a 302 in it so it sounds like a big tranny cooler and then test it again to see if it pukes again. I'll try giving ATO a call too.
Thanks guys!

I did a M5OD conversion on my '93 when my E4OD lost 4th. I found a donor body to pull the clutch pedal from and the wiring harness (although it only takes two wires and that is for reverse lights could use the one from the E4OD). All said I spent $1,500 converting mine. Alot cheeper than a standard E4OD. I have yet to replace my computer. It has codes in it but no light (yes the light does work). Check out my site for the write-up.

I have a 302, but the OD cancel switch is on the dash..so is that mean its the e40D for sure? Are there visible markings on the tranny anywhere signifing which model it is?

Wow, that's a step backwards. The M5OD is a POS, and yes, I used to own one. Besides, why even bother to have a manual if no granny first?

Wow! Maybe I'm wrong, I've just never seen or heard of an E4OD behind a 302 for the '90 model year. So your OD cancel switch is electronic and has a little yellow light under it when on?
I've never seen an AOD pan but the E4OD pan will have "Metric" on it.
