I'm thinking about buying a Jeep for another project...

The one i'm looking at (as the AD reads):
1968 Jeep CJ, 231 V6, stock drivetrain, no lift...

I just want to know if it's a good buy as far as the motor/ drivetrain go.

Is it worth looking into?

Thanks in advance

Depends on condition and price, but hell yeah! Of course I'm a total nut when it comes to early CJ's What you'll get most likely is a short-nose CJ-5 with an 81" wheelbase, can't remember if the gas tank is still under the seat in '68, but it will be a closed knuckle Dana 27 front, offset Dana 44 rear, probably with two piece shafts, most likely 4.27 or 4.88 gears (V6 with 5.38's is way cool) a T14a 3 speed, Dana 18 t-case, and enough charater to make us all envious. If it is all stock and original, it's not a 231 V6, it's a 225 Dauntless. Listen to it run, the 225 is an odd fire, sounds like it's missing all the time. If you asked on the JU board they'd tell you not to buy a CJ-5 cus Ralph Nader said not to. Of course they prolly would ask if it was a '68 CJ-7 first.

I haven't seen it yet, but the guy want's $1500.00 for it! I prob could get him down some more depending on what shape its in. From the looks of the pic, everything is there and in good shape. Not sure about rust though. It's a southern Jeep, so i don't think it would be too rusty...

I'm waiting for him to call me back tonight.

For $1500 I would hope that it's pretty clean, but there are some freaks out there that think any old 4x4 junk is worth a mint. I got a '62 Willy's CJ-5 with a swapped in 225 and T14 with 5.38's for $50, yeah it was a pile, but it was a complete pile, and we had it running in less than two hours, took it for a spin, it lit up all four tires on dry pavement in 4HI and we ran it up to 70mph (in 2wd of course) without anything real big falling off. Then it backfired and caught fire and burned to the ground. Damn, what a waste. But the guy sent my $50 check back to me when he heard what happened, and I still have the Jeep.

yep - ejection seat gas tank, D27 closed knuckle front, D44 two-piece 19-spline axles in the rear. It mayhave the factory power-lok in the back. Tcase mounted ebrake. The Buick 225 came stock, not the 231. Steering will be Ross style. If you start lifting, count on ditching the Ross setup in favor of a saginaw. You may also have a Warn OD in there....... (very sweet). I picked up a stock '69 last year (225, M18, T14A, Warn OD) and it's been rebuild and fab-o-mania ever since... SM420 swap begins this weekend.

If you haven't already, check www.forumco.com/sparky for a wealth of early 5 information. It's all they talk about over there.......
