: 78 Scout II ?
CaptainFleXJ151 06-26-2002, 04:46 PM I am trying to find out the gear ratio on a Scout. Here is what I know:
1978 Scout II 345 V8, 727 auto, Dana 20, Dana 44's
What gear ratios did the factory offer with this setup?
They are horrible, you won't want them fro your J**p. Just step away from the truck and nobody gets hurt:D
They could have quite a few ratios, most likely they are 3.54, but anything is possible.
Take a look at the tag and see what they are, or rotate the tires and figure it out fer yourself.
snoop dogg 06-26-2002, 05:16 PM should be a tag on the diff cover, but i would guess 3.54, but don't go on my word.

I don't understand why people think this way, scout 44's(fronts especially) are too weak to wheel a scoutII with a 750 lb v8 on anything bigger than 33" rubber, but they are perfect for a jeep guy.
Personally I am very thankful that jeep guys want them and are willing to pay for them. Jeepers are financing my 60 swap.:flipoff2:
What are you a freking shrink, now you want to understand :flipoff2:
Let me explain:
IH Dana 20 can be found for 50 or less ~ Why, because we're the only ones who use them.
IH Dana 44 axles go for 400 (Ca.) ~ Why, because Jeep guys buy them too.
It's an issue of supply an demand and IH parts are of limited supply. It's the same reason you have to "finance your D60" if nobody wanted GM D60's they would be cheep, like they used to be.
Sounds like you've had too much coffee, lighten up. I sold my stock axles to help pay for my D60 /14 combo...
   have one.
TERRA-IZER 06-26-2002, 10:00 PM Most likely 3.54's thats the most common ratio in scout 2's, 3.07's, 3.54's, 3.73's and 4.09's where offered in 78. Check the tag on the diff, or the line set ticket on the glove box door.

Not bagging on you Neps, just the fact that anytime a jeeper or sammi guy aks about scout axles 'someone' always gives him some shit like "don't be robbin off of a scout", when for us the axles are pretty much useless.
BTW, I bought my front 60 for $200 because the supply of junked out 1 tons is a little higher down here in Redneck country.
Lighten up and have yourself a cold sody water:flipoff2:

Actually, Jeeps of all sizes use Dana 20s, too.
A LOT more than Scouts.
I asked a guy at a junkyard in Wyoming for a SII Dana 20 - $250.
I asked for a Jeep Dana 20 - $!50.
I told him they're the same damn thing and said I wouldn't be happy, but I'd give him $100..
Bring some inexpensive 1 ton front axles this way and I'll trade you all the D20's you want...
The Dana 20's go for $50.00 out here from an individual and any transfer case at a yard is 85.00. Long blocks are 150, and axles are 120, but we can't find any D60's :(
We had a military surplus auction last week and Boyce came in and bought every CUCV they had, I think there were 8 or 10.
We've got two club members searching for some D60 right now with no luck.
I didn't mean that jeeps don't use them, they don't use the Scout ones. At least not out here, they can get all the Jeep D20s they want.
twodafloor 06-29-2002, 06:52 PM way easy my ESP says 3:07 for auto.

wp     WTF Kilroy?
I have 3.73's stock in mine with the TF727 and by the by mine's a 71(72)
twodafloor 06-30-2002, 06:43 PM I'll stand on my first bet........................
My 72 (build date Nov. 71) 2wd Cal. emissions had 3:31. I don't doubt you have 3:73 but why would Captin's 78 have em.
I 'gulp' fail to see your logic sir.
remember late 70's IH was looking for emissions and fuel mileage
wp
The '78 that I purchased NEW came with 3.54, in fact every one on the showroom floor had 3.54, even the SSII's. I was hoping to find something in the 4.10 range, but almost every Scout II with a 345 came with the 3.54 gear set unless you wanted to special order it.
I believe that the "Logic" is that the 3.54 gear set was the most common used set from 1976 to 1980 with the 345 auto.
Who have you been talking to? When you went into the showroom fuel mileage wasn't a big selling point, performance against the Bronco and Blazer was. Warranty was also a big deal with the sales people, remember the 100,000-mile warranty with 5-year rust through protection?
I'd take that bet, you aren’t gonna see many 3.07's. In 24 years the number I've seen with 3.07 is minuscule compared to 3.54.
twodafloor 07-01-2002, 06:04 PM Sorry to dispute you but I have thrown out more 3:07 danas then i can count. I run 3:54 gears now blew up my rearend 2 years ago and could not repeat could not find a like axle any where internet or otherwise.
If you bought yours new in CA that may make a differance.
Like I was saying my Scout built nov 71 had emissions air pump, cat converter(removed when i got it) etc. It was a CA only vehicle. ALso with 3:31 gears and a rear swaybar. It was a 304 rated at the 197.? hp stamped on the door. I consider that a strange combo.
I am well aware of the warrenty given to Scout II just posted on it here a few days ago. Also I no very well a dealership that started as a Ford/IH near where I live and I and they really believe that IH did not think they could go on with the on coming gas crisis and tougher emissions regs. I also have had this discusson with several people that work for IH at the Nats and otherplaces and they agree. If they could have just held on a little longer............................................ ..............

Ditto
Would you like to see my 75 non-cat, non-air pump equip 345/727 with 3.54's, or my 74 with 3.73's
Fawken Newbie :flipoff2:
No wonder we get such a bad rap :D
I'd like to see your '71 with a cat and unleadded fuel... Never try to bullshit your way through an issue, we can see your full of shit...
I'm not from California, just stationed here.
Old Scout 07-02-2002, 08:34 AM Some cars got cats in 75. GM lead the way and the German cars had a thing called a thermal reactor instead of cats. Most trucks didn't get them until 79, it was all dependent on GVW.
FWIW My father designed most of the oil refineries in the Bay Area . Union 76 in Rodeo and Shell Oil in Martinez made there first batches of unleaded in 2-73, Standard oil in Benicia in 3-73.
BTW I bought my first Scout in 1980. It was a 78 with 345/727 and 3.73's!
YellowIH 07-02-2002, 08:53 AM
My first Scout had a 345/727 with a D30 and D44, drum brakes and 3.73 gears. Bite me for not knowing your ass from a hole in the ground. No wonder the phrase DAN's came to be.....geez. Are you a heeper? Fawkin Newbie......
How do I get the friggin "NEWBIE" monacher off? :nuke:
I don't wanna be one any more.....I like the :vader2: side better.
:flipoff2: :D :flipoff2: :D :flipoff2:
:skull:
Hooper 07-02-2002, 04:01 PM 77 SSII Dual pipes, no cats 345/727/d20/3.54
California rig, so I had pump and air injection, but unleaded fuel was not required, and in fact was a big issue when the switch was made.

I was a Jr in High School! :flipoff2:
From an even older fart(and newbie), I bought mine new in 1976. It has a 304 with factory duals wide ratio 4 speed, dana 20, XLC package and 3.54 axles. No smog control and ran on regular gas. I say ran because its beeen sitting up for a number of years but that's gonna change as I'm fixin' to drop a 392 in it.
P.S. Uh-h,wut hidden signature?
