I recently read some posts about people having problems with the larger SSR's, 37's specifically. I have been thinking of getting some 285/75/16 (roughly 33.9") and was wondering if anybody has noticed any problems with this size....or 35's.

I ran ssr's, then boggers, now tsl's and had
zero problems with the ssr's ( six con trips,
four trec's) I'm going back to ssr's. I keep
hearing about weakness in the sidewalls, but
only had problems with the tsl's. The boggers
(37") rode like crap. Its your money, and the
ssr's are better than most other makes of tires. This is only my opinion

I have never had off road tires with sidewalls as weak as the SSRs, I tore them up, on an average of nearly one a month for 6 months, then got rid of them. They have very good performance, but damn the sidewalls shoulda just had zippers in em, I was opening them up so much.

I work at a 4x4 shop and we warranty more SSR's than any other tire because of tread/cord seperation they seem to want to come apart around half tread. Plus the price of them dosn't seem worth it to me.

Well, my other choice is 34x9.50 bias ply TSL's. Which is better? This vehicle isn't a daily driver, but I do drive it to the trails and around town.

This tire is ridiculously narrow. Have you looked at the 33 x 12.50 TSL? It is the largest 33" tire on the market. No frolls and tough as hell.

I have run two sets of 34x9.5 one set of 36x12 tsl's and have a set of 35 ssr's on each of my current jeeps. I love the ssr's on a daily driver jeep because they work awesome in the mud like a swamper should but they still drive really well on the street. They dont wear down like the other swampers do. My yj is a trailer queen now so I am selling the ssr's on it to buy boggers. <IMG SRC="smilies/jeep2.gif" border="0">

I heard that the tread separation issue has been resolved and that is why they were in short supply last year. I have not had problems running my 35's under my fullsize Ram. I admit I do not do any hardcore wheeling, but they have yet to tear a sidewall. I clawed the front end up some boulders and deep ruts without breaking a sweat either. Awesome on the street however for such an aggressive tread. No problems in the rain, even with the Detroit.

They wear fairly fast though on my heavy ass truck... with the locker especially.

Also, the 16's and 16.5's have and extra 2 or 4 plies over the 15's.

my ssr's have worked great so far.. rode a lil rough in the beginning, but as they're wearing a little they're getting better.. i hope the tread separation problem is solved..

I had the two 33x12.5x15 SSRs blow out on me at about 65mph on a nice perfectly smoothe piece of highway. I started to get a rough ride which degraded to a har vibration which caused me to pull over. There was a bulge in the tread area. I figured if I drove slow, I could make a gas station. About 4 miles further they blew completely from the inside out. The steel belts just shot through the tread. I have received NO response from Interco.

I have had a set of 35x12.50 SSR on my FJ40 since spring 2000 with no problems. Although I am thinking about selling them for a more aggressive tread (ie TSL SX or MT/R's).

I called them and Dev called me right back. He told me to take it to any swamper dealer and see if they will warrenty it.

yeap, ran the 35x12.50 ssr's destroyed one... ripped sidewall.... sold em and bought tsl's.... ssr's sidewalls suck <IMG SRC="smilies/bender.gif" border="0">

That's exactly what I'm running now after going through *two sets* of SSRs.
First set: torn sidewall one one, bulge on another, huge hunks of lug tore out of a third, was running an AT spare, so I turned the only good one into the spare and got 4 new SSRs.
Second set: One tore off huge hunks of lugs, two more got pregnant (that bulge from I think thread seperation).

So on to the TSLs. Good so far, my rig is 90% trail only at this point, the TSLs are a hell of a lot louder on the street, but who cares?
