I don't post much over here but I have lurked and read and watched. Thought I would share a build I am doing with a bunch of high school students.

This all started with my old trusty YJ finally rusting to the point that it needed a new body. So after talking thinking about it and talking it over, we thought it would be a good time to go a different direction and build a vehicle with more room for passengers, gear, tools, parts and what not.

I say we in many places because this Jeep is being partially built by high school students and they are calling the shots. They chose the vehicle, colors, mods, lift, lighting, etc. When completed, this vehicle will be used in the same way as the YJ was. Students get to drive it in the local mud drags, parades and off road events and competitions. We also take it to car and truck shows, visit other schools with it and use it for general PR for the Career Center. In the winter, many times we have been called to help get hospital staff to work and we always use it to get students out of the ditches around the school.

Plans:
Convert to 4wd
BDS True 4 link Long Arm http://www.bds-suspension.com/
8.8 rear, HPd30 front, both alloy, both locked
Kalkaska Fab front bumper
Essentially Off Road full internal cage http://www.eoronline.com/
Bunch of stuff from Jeeperz Creeperz http://www.jeeperz-creeperz.com/
Bunch of stuff from North West 4x4 http://www.northwest4x4.com/
Durabak partial exterior and cargo area http://www.nonslipcoating.com/
35x12.5 ProComp XTerrains on AE-589's
Lots of chopping

This is what we started with. A 1995 2 wheel drive XJ. Saved from the salvage yard. Yes, it was in the junk yard. Said to have a bad motor. Vehicle had a Missouri plate on it and it was last registered 2 years ago. Gas smelled really bad and about a thousand parts were thrown at it to make it run and none helped. Even the coil is just plugged in and not bolted down just to test to see if a coil would make it run.

The Saturday it got towed to my shop, one of my students did about a half hour of diag, found no spark, checked the CPS and said it was bad. I had one at home so we went and got it, popped it in and it started right up. Runs great.

Here she sits in the Junk Yard, waiting to be stripped.

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/new-jeep/junk-yard.JPG

The day it made it to the shop.

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/new-jeep/pan.gif

So the inside is a bit rough. We'll see what we can do with it.

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/new-jeep/i3.JPG
http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/new-jeep/i4.JPG

The inside cleaned up pretty good but it is all still soaked and smells SUPER bad since it was sitting there for a while with a busted window. We will gut the inside and do some inspections, cleaning and other things.

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/new-jeep/i5.JPG
http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/new-jeep/i6.JPG

Cargo area will be stripped of carpet, a reinforcement will be welded/bolted in, and the rear shocks will be in-boarded to this. Then the whole cargo area will be covered with Durabak. The spare will be stored inside, as well as a toll/parts storage device.

Drivers side floor great

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/new-jeep/driver-floor.JPG

Passenger side floor slightly damaged from running it with the exhaust busted right at the cat and sitting with the passenger front window busted out. A few small pin holes and some surface rust. Nothing big.

The engine, needs some cleaning, new fluids, new battery, air filter etc. The normal stuff. The AC clutch is busted but the system is still charged. We will swap the clutch off the other XJ I have that will play donor for parts.

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/new-jeep/engine1.JPG

Engine power washed

Did the carpet too

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/new-jeep/DSCF0892.JPG

Paint is really sun faded but buffs out great

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/new-jeep/buff-test.JPG

Updates as I get time. We are much further along than this.

good luck man as much as i love a rags to riches junkyard build i do enjoy starting with a clean reliable rig... if i had the green i'd love to resurrect something from the dead but i've attempted a few and i spend budget just making it run :D but it looks like a good start

This thing runs perfect. No issues there. No smoke, no knocks, about 70,000 miles.

Original owner thought the motor was bad, AND they were trying to drive a 2wd Cherokee in Sault Sainte Marie Michigan in the winter. Not a good choice. So they scrapped it.

With a CPS it was totally drivable. The stock radio even works good...although the rear, overhead speaker pod in the cargo area is missing. I have yet to find a replacement for that.

Nice find, but I think it's a 1996 XJ. I don't think they had airbags '95.

Not OBDII so I don't think it's a 1996.

This is the donor XJ. Yea yea, I know, it looks good. BUT Everything from the rockers down is GONE. Rust has been really hard on this machine.

So we parted it out for the good stuff. Front axle, trans and tcase for the 4x4 conversion. Some of the interior parts, tinted windows, dash parts....all kinds of misc stuff. Stripped any parts that could be used for trail spares or to replace normal trail damage also.

Yanked the motor. This motor will be rebuilt as I have money to do so, into a 4.7 stroker. For now, it will just sit in a corner of my garage. This will be the 7th stroker I will have built.

Stripped to the bone. Saved the glass and trim for use in the other XJ. The tint is factory, and since it was a Country model, it had nicer door panels and stuff.

Sold off everything that could be unbolted that we didn't need for our build. Doors, hatch, bumpers...I mean everything.

Why not keep the doors for spares or half doors?

Why not keep the doors for spares or half doors?

Bottoms were rusted pretty bad....and most of all I needed money for the build. I sold everything I could off it, and I parted this out except I kept things that would work on the new rig...wheels, tires, rear axle, lockers, RS900 shocks, all the electronics like CB and stuff. Rolled it, and the body was so rusted that it didn't want to stay on the frame.

Gutted the inside in prep for Durabak, mods and the Cage and started to pull other stuff off for paint and other mods.

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/gutted/DSCF0996.JPG

Pulled all the crappy glass. The glass in this one had that cheap stick on tint...actually 2 layers of it and it was all scratched, bubbled and missing in spots. The green XJ has factory tint. Way nicer.

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/gutted/DSCF0997.JPG

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/gutted/DSCF0998.JPG

We're also swapping in much of the interior trim from the green XJ. It was a Country and had a nicer interior. Front seats will come from the parted out YJ...they were those GM seats that someone on here sold a million of. Nice suspension type seats. Rear seats and door panels will come from the green XJ.

Just for what its worth, my 95 has a driver side airbag... take it out anyway for a trail rig. I remember a past offroad event where a lady was knocked out by her airbag going off when she slid into a tree. Or pull the fuse offroad!

There is going to be a switch added to kill the airbag while off road. I already played that game once when I was a passenger in a ZJ. One drop off a ledge and the bags went off. That sucked.

Little interior fixing

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/under/DSCF0984.JPG

Then I spent about 2 hours power washing the bottom to knock all the old undercoating off.

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/under/DSCF1104.JPG

Then re-coated it and got the trans and tcase in. Refreshed the trans.

Added a SYE from Jeeperz Creeperz and swapped in the gears and chain from a chevy np231. They are about 1/2 inch wider.

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/under/DSCF1106.JPG

Ditched the plastic "skid plate"

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/under/DSCF1299.JPG

Coated the gas tank and picked up a stock type skid from Blue XJ. The stocker will be plated with 3/16 for added strength.

There is a hole in the end of the fork on the fork lift for a bolt to go through the chain and the fork so it can't slip.

We'll be building a few things. Just cut the plate for the gas tank skid so now we have to bend it to fit. The front bumper will be mostly built by us. Rear bumper we'll be building. Lots of body mods and welding. Lots of wiring. There will be a spare holder and some type of tool/parts holder in the back. Maybe we'll make a slide out or something. We'll build rock sliders. We have to build seat mounts for the different front seats.

We aren't doing a bunch of hard core fab on this build. This one is more for theory and practical application.

We also have a Toyota pick-up of a customer's in the shop and that will be more fab. SAS Swap, maybe back halfing it with a 4 link. Full trail rig though...no street time.

Finish buffing that poor thing.

:D After the Durabak is on. Most of it is all sanded down right now. I really gotta get caught up on the pictures. We just did a flex text on it to measure for shocks.

Collecting parts.

So there is a pick up bed of parts from my garage and basement that I added to the the pile....then the other stuff started to show up.

Got a package from Jeeperz Creeperz....always great to do business with Kevin down there. Got gears, install kit, etc etc shipped to me from him and then when I was down for Thanksgiving I picked up a few other things like grab handles, bumpstops and stuff from the store.

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/parts/DSCF1210.JPG

This is the heavy duty track bar bracket we will be using.

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/parts/DSCF1212.JPG

So then I had to deliver parts that I sold off the YJ to people down in Traverse City so I stopped into NorthWest4x4.

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/parts/DSCF1166.JPG

Man do they have a nice place. And a great bunch of guys there also. They gave me a tour around the store and then the shop area and let me peek in on some of the projects they have going.

I had never heard of this place till I was on the BDS website and looked up distributors of their lifts. After chewing the fat with these guys for a couple of hours, I went home with the new BDS True Long Arm kit. Now this lift is pricy but call NorthWest and see what they can do for ya.

The BDS long arm was chosen because it is a true 4 link and it does not use radius arms. We have seen many radius arm designs leave people stranded in the woods when one mount breaks. This setup is easier to get out of the woods with on something that has broken. And if something does bust....who can beat the BDS "no fine print" warranty? No one can.

This kit is by far the most complete and well thought out kit I have seen, although there are many places where it wants you to re-use stock hardware. We won't be doing that. All stock hardware will be replaced with new grade 8 hardware.

Finally finished with picking up stuff and almost done with my ebay buying spree. :D

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/parts/DSCF1181.JPG

BDS lower arms, way bigger. Super beefy. I Opted for the Super Flex system.

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/parts/DSCF1185.JPG

Upper arm...same thing, Super Flex

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/parts/DSCF1186.JPG

Just noticed......this doesn't seem like it's going to fit. More on that later.

you might want to move that frame side mount forward and down - not because of brake line length, but because back there, the hard line is VERY suseptable to being ripped off the body as a rock is picked up and pulled through the fender with the tire...

just something I've seen happen...

Brad Smith
12-10-2007, 07:53 PM
I see that you picked up another A/C pump, with the mild summers and long winters you should add an air tank and use the pump for on board air one of the best upgrades you can do, using the stock pump

MuddyPaws
12-10-2007, 08:11 PM
We did a flex test today and moved the brake hard line. There is so much room between the tire and frame, I would have to pick up a pumpkin size rock to rip it off.

The old control arm mounts will be cut off.

We have an large Ultimate Air CO2 tank. http://www.ultimate-air.com/

I kept the other pump from the green XJ because I need the clutch off it. The green xj's pump was dead, knocking REAL bad. The red Cherokee has good working AC but the clutch was busted. So I swapped the clutch off the dead pump and put it on the good pump.

We are fighting that right now in Michigan. The gov. just doesn't see any benefit to any vocational program. Stupid <insert bad word here>:grinpimp:

I work in a Career Center that serves the entire eastern upper peninsula for Michigan. So at the outskirts, I have students that travel about 45 minutes one way to come to my class. Then on the way back, they have to eat lunch on the bus and they don't get a normal lunch at school. They have to want to come to my class because the travel time takes away one hour of credit they can get to graduate. So for what we call the area student (as opposed to the locals) I only get the kids with good grades and stuff....not the ones that might not graduate if they fail one class.

Locals are different though...I get all kinds of locals.:p

Here is the problem I was talking about with the bump stop. According to all info, The 87-96 models had larger diameter mounts then the 97-01. But this one is a 95 and it has the smaller diameter mounts. Might be a thing with the 2 wheel drive XJ but i'm not sure.

Not a big deal, A quick message to Matt with BDS and a new set is on the way.

Not trying to be a d... but why is this kid not using the welding helmet? Looks to me like its on his head but its not down enough for him to look out of it.
Cant really tell in the second pic but it looks like hes not in that one either.

I think the first pic is a tack strike. Not sure. I'm not a welder so I don't know what is ok and what isn't. I know over the years I have seen the "close your eyes tack" many many times, even on TV.

Didn't get a whole lot done this day. Friday is usually when we get most of the work done because it is open shop day and that's when kids bring all their cars in to do whatever...and anyone that wants to work on the Jeep can. Today was a test day so they were busy most of the time taking an electrical exam.

We did get some done, but much that isn't really picture worthy. New (used) AC clutch, bled the brakes, hooked up the front drive shaft, installed the exhaust pipe off the header, did some sanding. Mostly small stuff because there were a bunch of vehicles in the shop needing attention.

This got done....

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/misc/DSCF1312.JPG

And the kids found out what happens when you sea foam an engine and forget to turn on the exhaust fan. They had the hose hooked up, just didn't turn the fan on. It was 100 times worse than this at the worst....had all the ventilation going before I took this. I was waiting for someone to pull the fire alarm.

Well today half the schools were closed so we had some down time and we set the Jeep down to do a little flex text to see how much room we had for shocks, make sure the brake lines were good, check fender clearance and what not.

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/flex-test/DSCF1390.JPG

Brake line is a banjo string but the spring is also off it's mount. Looks like limiting straps will be going in. Man the BDS lift flexes like crazy in the front.

I am sure the rear will work in and loosin up allowing for more flex, but it all depends on the springs. It took a few months and long wheelin trips to get my RE springs to start flexing really well

Yea, every set of leaves I have had took a little bit to free them up. It's odd, the leaves seen soft when you bounce the thing.

But like I said, there is nothing inside...and I mean nothing. Not even a headliner in those pics. So you add all the seats, interior trim, a 35 inch spare, toolbox and spare parts, spare fluids, cooler, full roll cage....

Gotta soften up a bit.

When you do your flex test put the front shocks on. It won't droop as far which will also reduce how far the other side stuffs. Your brake lines should also be fine. If not relocate the frame mount about 1.5"-2" lower. This will also allow you to measure for limiting straps.

With the front end set-up with the shocks on it you might find out that the fenders will clear the tires.

When you check flex you need to lift a front tire. This will allow the back to flex more because of the wieght transfer.

It will take a while for the rear springs to loosen up.

MuddyPaws
12-15-2007, 11:02 PM
If you look at that last pic, the hard lines have been relocated and the fender is cut more.

The front shocks are in and it still goes just about as far. We're running long travel RS9000's in the front so we get more droop than we can really use. We're gonna put limit straps in to keep it from drooping onto the shocks for limit.

Ya our career center is actually one of the lower scale ones in the area but we have full cnc machines, water jet, lathes mills etc etc.

To get into the classes you have to fill out an application with references and they decide on an individual basis and many times even talk to you about your interests in taking the course. This makes the enviroment great because you dont get hardly any of the drop out kids. Our auto body shop just got ASE certified and we get to do competitions in a month or two. Normally we get top 5 in state every year.

Got a PM about the cage...so......

Had to go out to the store to get some milk so I swung over to the shop and snapped a couple of pics to show you what I mean about the cage.

Front hoop....close to dash but vents still work.

Glovebox....well....

Driver's side...the light switch misses the bar by about how thick your finger is.

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/cage/DSCF1471.JPG

Here is the middle hoop. If it goes straight up and down, it is too far into the door opening. I still don't like how far it extends into the opening at the top.

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/cage/DSCF1466.JPG

but this is how it sits with a seat there, so I guess that's where it has to be.

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/cage/DSCF1469.JPG

I am going to have to shorten up the back stringers because I want this hoop closer to the rear seat.

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/cage/DSCF1472.JPG

If I don't move the rear hoop forward, then the kickers won't fit right.

The cage could use some triangulation for added strength. What are you doing for floor plate to tie it into the frame? I would also reccomend plating the frame and beefing the steering box mounts.

I knew I would hear "triangulation" here.

Not all the tubes are in. Nothing is even tack welded yet. There will be gussets and a few more bars going plus the bars already cut to go in.

The cage plates thought the floor, then ties into the frame stiffeners and the rocker guards, both of which have yet to be fabbed. They are drawn up, but that's it.

Not planning to roll it down a mountain though. I live in Michigan and just wanted some added protection. It's a little different than out west.

I'll try and get the measurments today.

If there is something that is funky...lemme know. I mean besides the poles not being straight and all that. It's just being mocked up right now. Nothing more.

"Needs more triangulation" is no help. It wouldn't matter if the cage had so many triangles that the driver couldn't get in, someone here would say NMT. Not building a JeepSpeed rig so none of that is needed.

Oh, and the Hood vents came in yesterday.

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/hood-vents/DSCF1489.JPG

Here it is, the Riddler 8.8 cover. Bought from Mesa 4x4 http://www.mesa4x4.com/ on here. I like it because it is a lipless cover and the bolts are somewhat out of the way, it was less than the others, but way heavier duty than the stock one.

The front cover will be one of those bent plate ones. I seem to mash the front more than the rear anyway.

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/diff-cover/DSCF1462.JPG

First order of business was to get rid of the R and all the cast bumps and get it ready for powder coating.

I'm not saying to get crazy with the triangulation, just add some. My main concern would be with the main hoop. Other then that just use lots of gussets.

I love hearing this stuff. It means more to me than you know. I do it for the kids and for the love of the sport. My students get on these boards and read posts like this and start to realize how lucky they are to have a good Career Center, not just my program, but all the programs we offer. Welding, Machine, Construction, Drafting, Woodshop...and that's just the shop classes. We have the Allied Health, Marketing, Computers etc also. Fantastic opportunities for the students that the state can't seem to see as important.

So thanks for the comments.:)

Now, while we are waiting for seats (picking them up in the morning) we did a little work on the front bumper. There is a MP cut in the front....the kids want to add some bling and light the holes and the MP up with some LED bars.:p

There will be some side bars that wrap around the corners.

They wouldn't clear the side marker lights so I had to hack them off. We made new sides for it.

No really, that will be too late. :p

No I wansnt gonna say more triangulation. I took another look at the pic and it was just the camera angle that looked weird to me. Looks better now that you have more of a fuller pic of it.

They can build it however they want. They are doing a great job so far.

Once the hoilday break is over they will show updates I'd guess.

Keep up the good work and training. I hope you had a great holiday break.

We'll have more updates this coming weekend. There will be bunch of kids coming in this Wednesday and Thursday to do some work.

I told them I would be there all day and if they needed to work on their car or install something they got for Christmas, then they could do it then. I have had several e-mails from students that want to work on the Jeep then so I said fine. We might get a bunch done.:)

I wonder how many pizza's I will need for lunch. I already have 5 dozen doughnuts reserved for the morning.

hey this is great that kids get to do this stuff at school. I do that but i just get to make parts in Ag power tec and not build the jeep at school actually. So its kinda boring i spent some where like 9 days building the shackles for my fsj cuz we olny have 45min a day so it sucks.

Yes, but not much you can really "see". Christmas break has slowed progress. I got lots of welding in the rear wheel wells done. The other day it too 5 hours to get the front driver's seat mounted....long story...Welded up the front part of the cage. Drilled some of the front bumper mount holes. Lots of cleaning and sanding has been done also.

Rear wheel wells all welded up. Mig welded the seam back together from the outside, then brazed it from the inside, then applied panel bonding epoxy on the inside. Will be plenty strong.

Ok, got more done.

Pulled all the crappy headliner material off the headliner.

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/headliner/DSCF1594.JPG

Then is looked like this. I soaked it all down with fiberglass resin.

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/headliner/DSCF1595.JPG

Tomorrow i'll glue the new headliner material onto it. I got actual headliner material from Jo-Ann Fabrics.

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/headliner/DSCF1596.JPG

While that was drying and the paint for the roll cage was drying we started the sliders/steps.

The part that will be bolted to the pinch weld. 15 bolts will hold it on. Prolly overkill but whatever. LOL

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/sliders/DSCF1602.JPG

The roll cage toll be plated through the floor and then welded to the cross bars that hold the sliders on to tie it into the frame a bit. That's more the reason we went with so many bolts.

WoW. Honestly. WoW.

I don't know where you are, but I would have my kids go to that school.

I unfortunately went to a school where the shop classes were all cut save for Wood Shop, CAD and Intro Tech, tried to buy the schools old engine hoists and shop equipment but they put it in storage in case Arizona ever deems it a viable expense...

everyone just seems to cut funding for "non-essential" learning... and i hate it...

good luck with this rig, your doing an awesome job, not only on the project but teaching these kids!

MuddyPaws

Same crap is going on here in Michigan. Gov is cutting funding but requiring more. The new freshmen starting next year will have to have 4 years of math (one being algebra 2), 4 years of english, 3 years of science and 2 years of foreign language.

When are they going to have tome to take my class? I might not have a job. Foreign language? If I would have had to have 2 years of that, I would have dropped out. The drop out rate is going to climb like crazy here. Current freshman now have to take 1 year of foreign language and algebra 2 and they are having trouble getting some kids through that. Not ALL kids will EVER pass algebra 2.

Don't get me started. I have to go back to work in the morning and be happy after Christmas break.

At least we start getting ready to go to Detroit to see the auto show.

I wasn't gonna post these but, here they are.

Flame me if you want, but I am going to be using this vehicle to wheel, AND for PR for my Auto Service Program for student recruitment, community education, funding, etc . Like it or not, bling sells to the non-tech people. So there has to be some bling. And anyway, those of you that know me, know I like a little bling.:p

This is going to be so kick ass when it's done.

There are plans for side pockets and some other stuff. It's no where near done yet. The angle of the box matches the angle of the rear seat and comes right up to the top of the seat.

Entire design was done by an 11th grader. He's not super mechanical but he really got into this part of the build. He did a cool drafting style drawing of it in...get this...publisher, and when it came time to build it, his measurements and angles were almost perfect and his sub enclosure volume was right in the middle of spec for the sub we are using. Wait till you see that baby. 24 pounds of pure thumpita thumpita.

Here is the Ultimate Air tank. We stripped the paint and re-did it with some bling.

This is a CO2 tank for doing all kinds of crap with. One of the handiest things I have in the Jeep. Fills tires, runs air tools, welding shielding gas, fills pool toys, blows dirt out of the holes that the bases go in for T-Ball....all kinds of uses.

im diggin the front bumper...how did you mount it? are u gonna make it so a winch will fit in there? what about a paint color?

MuddyPaws
01-20-2008, 07:20 PM
hahaha...we have a MG project going on too.

I don't have a side shot but a SuperWinch EP9.0 goes in there. Color of the bumpers and sliders and roof mount I think is going to be a sorta gray silver color .

Oh, and it's mounted on the driver's side with the 3 steering bolts, the 2 front bumper mount holes, and 2 more holes in the frame that were sleeved behind the steering box. On the pass side we just drilled everything to match the drivers side and sleeved al the holes.

So it's held on by 10 grade 8 7/16 bolts and 4 grade 8 1/2 bolts..

Ok, so I knew that the location of where I mounted the Garmin GPS-Map 478 was going to cause reception issues but I really like where it's mounted and it's a clean install. Mounted with the slick marine mount, makes is super rigid and is positioned for great visibility.

So the fix was simple, an external, amplified antenna. E-Bay, $25 shipped.

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/misc/DSCF0035.JPG

The regular antenna pops off and exposes the BNC connector.

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/misc/DSCF0036.JPG

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/misc/DSCF0037.JPG

A test drive in the Ram with the new antenna shows some fantastic reception. you couldn't ask for better. That is 11 Sat locks. I did see 12 at one time but I didn't have my camera to take the pic, so I came home and shot this pic in my driveway, in front of the garage, under a huge ass pine tree.

Yes. We have the local mud runs they run it in, then they drive it in the parade, and then we take an annual weekend to the Silver Lake Sand Dunes when they run it, and when I do on trips to Canada or Drummond Island I usually take 1 or 2 with me to run it in what it's built for. Not all want to take it off road, but some do.

I have let kids take my Jeeps to the prom, homecomming, graduation and different dances.

I have to carry a special rider on my insurance for all this, and I have to have special safety equipment installed and available all the time.

I teach them how to properly manage a vehicle off road and safe recovery and all that. I have been doing this for 12 years and the worst injury I have had in my group is a sunburn and a 2 inch thorn stuck in a kid's hand when he leaned against one of those crazy trees at The Badlands.

Awesome of you to say. I don't know if you have ever been to the Badlands park in Indianna, but they have these crazy trees that have huge spikes growing out of them...I never seen them before. We were down there competing in Four Wheeler's RTCC and I backed into a tree and it stabbed me in the back. Fawkin trees.

Durabak Time

ok, finally got round to doing the paint. The plan was to go with a "Medium Texture" this time. The YJ was full on 5 coats of textured Durabak and, although it lasted fantastic. Held up to everything including a flop on Drummond Island, it was a bitch to clean. Once cleaned, it looked like brand new but still. I wanted something durable but smoother a bit.

So it got 2 coats of textured Durabak and then 4 coats of smooth, UV stable Durabak.

Here is the first coat.

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/xj/durabak/first-coat.jpg

I don't remember the stages of these 2 pics.

Yer messing with me right? I know it's bling, but I still like a small degree of bling.:flipoff2:

It's MetalCast spray paint. It's a 2 step paint. First layer is a reflective silver color and the second layer is a tinted clear coat. It comes in different colors but I have never seen pink however they have a purple that is close.

The paint is made by duplicolor and is heat resistant. I ran it on the shocks on the YJ for many years...only in blue. I also did many of the motor parts with it. Pics below.

I used about 2/3 gallon of texture and about 3/4 gallon of smooth. 2 coats texture, 4 coats smooth.

I have the hood vents that are black also, but yea, gotta balance it out a bit. Wait till you see it with the silver stuff on it. Kinda sets alot of it off.

I got those X's for under 600 delivered for 5 of them from SportsTrailerz or something off ebay. The one not grooved is the spare, not gonna grove that one. The others are grooved....or mostly done. Busted the groover blade again yesterday and seem to have misplaced the new blades.

Well....in the wheel well it could be put in there but I ended up spraying it with ruberized undercoating. I like that stuff on the frame rails and wheel wells and stuff because in about 10 minutes you can re-spray that stuff in there and it looks like new...fresh and clean....no scrubbing. Maybe I should have done it....too late now though.:p

I haven't ever heard of Durabak before but it looks good. Herculiner and the like is what I'm familiar with. Your tape line is super smooth/clean. Any special type of tape needed for it. I've heard of just using the blue painters tape...wait until it gets tacky then pull it. Is that what you did?

Keep on working with the kids. I wish others would do the same. Like others said...I wish I had opportunities like your giving these kids when I was younger.

Blue is for when it doesn't really matter.

If it matters I only buy the 3D green auto's painters tape, it's worth every penny.

Kinda like black tape, I will only buy 3M Super 33+. I haven't found any tape even close to it's quality. It works good below -0 degrees and doesn't unwrap as the years past.

Getting close. Prolly 2 more weeks. Have to finish the front bumper, wire the winch, and then do a bit of wiring for interior cargo and work lights and exterior lights.

Then off the exhaust shop. That might be the sticking point since I am out of money because the wife blew up her transmission in her van and I had to put a new one in. I had to sacrifice the Jeep money to put the wife back on the road. I'm about 500 bucks short of finishing it right now.

Finished up the front wheel wells...just some edge molding. It was put on then the Durabak was still tacky and the molding itself had glue in it. So it should stay.

The front shocks appear to be too long. The bumpstops either need to be longer if the tires rub when flexed.

If the bumpstops are long enough to keep the tires off the fenders the lower shock mounts need to be made lower.

Just cut the back of the coil spring mount off just behind the spring and put the shock mount on the LCA mount then add some reinforcements to beef up the LCA mount. For more strength and to protect your LCA's add a skid to the underside of the LCA mount too, if you haven't already.

BTW, did you weld the inside of the LCA mounts to the axle?

Here's a good example for the shock mount. All it lacks is a LCA skids and some final welds.

That's a damn good idea. The upper mount is moved outboard but I think I'll put it back and move the bottom like that if it turns out I need to. These shocks are off the YJ and I really want to re-use them.

And yea, the mounts are welded on the inside and there are skid plates on them.

Never seen pics of the mounts moved like that. Very cool.

Is that to the bumpstops or to the bumpstop mounting cups?

Maybe its my eyes, but it looks like your shocks would bottom out first.

If you change your upper mount keep it about 1"-1.5" outboard from the stock factory mounting hole.

I had some problems with shock to frame clearance when flexed. The outboard mounting corrected this issue.

Here are a couple of upper mounts I like

That measurement is to the bumpstop, so I would assume they will compress a bit and may cause problems in the right conditions. Almost all my wheeling is done a very low speeds.

I think it's an optical illusion the way it looks to you. The top of the shock is outboarded so it sorta looks shorter in the pic.

I still think I will move the mounts down though.

When I set up shock I leave 1/2" of travel when it is bottomed out metal to metal. That way I never need to worry about trashing the shocks or be afraid to push it hard.

Better safe then sorry, This time I'm also going to run limiting straps to prevent shock damage at full droop also. This is because I'm going with some Bilstein 7100's or 9100's shocks and they cost too much to trash.

I'm running RS9009's on the front of mine right now. I've got a buyer for mine when I upgrade. I have been happy with there performance, but I know a good bypass shock with a remote reservoir should be way better.

BTW. The hole in the frame to gain access to the UCA bolt can be pluged with a plug from any Mopar FWD car/van made in the late '80's-mid '90's belt splash shields. The plug is used so you can get a extention and socket on the crank to turn it without removing the shield. They are easy to find and do a great job of keeping the frame clean. A quick trip to the JY should get you a few.

Not sure if you can see it well but this is how the tire is secured in the center. Took it for the first ride. Lots of strange noises though. Pops, thumps, clicks, some kind of gear noise...maybe t-case, dunno. Lots of kinks to work out.

It's been a ton of fun. I spent a crap ton more money than I originally planned on though. Ended up having to sell the 383 stroker out of the YJ and the Howell fuel injection along with lots more crap I sorta kinda wanted to pack rat away for another project. Had to sell the dune buggy too. Oh well, this has been a great project.

I have a fantastic group of kids this year and can't praise them enough.

Start to finish over less than one school year. No one getting burned out...except me...and the kids have stayed interested because it really never stalled. Several have already expressed the desire to take it to prom.:)

Awesome build! I was just wondering if you thinned out the durabak when you sprayed it, or did you spray it as it came. How much did you end up using? I'm thinkin of doing the same to my 4runner.

you must have missed the part where it said no school money spent on this. All of this has come out of my pocket and from when I sold everything off the YJ I wasn't re-using.

I rolled it on as it came. Used about 2/3 of a gallon of texture and 3/4 gallon of smooth.

Shackle angle isn't really bad but the springs are long. This is the BDS 8.5 inch kit. When flexed the shackle hits the body fast. I just got new boomerang shackles from Kevin at Jeeperz Creeperz today in the mail. That should fix this issue. I think BDS is looking into doing the kit with boomerangs now.

Well, I still have to fab bump stop mounts for the rear.

36 inch long limit straps for the front from PolyPerformance.

Looks great.:smokin:

Their are always small issues when there are many different people working on it.

I have issues sometimes and I'm the only one doing the work... I hate when I get interrupted..:shaking:

So did you take it to the top of that snow pile?

Thats one of the only good things about snow, crawling big snow piles and driving like a drift car.:D We had a great winter in WI this year for once.

I didn't go all the way up, I was taking it easy on it just to see if it was going to stay together.

Off for an alignment on Monday.

Finished rear bumps tonight. Might have to call this one done....for now.:p

Shakedown next week...as soon as snowmobile season is over. Thank God for that. First big wheelin trip is May 2 when we shoot video for BDS.

Mother f-in paint did not hold. I'll be pulling them off this week and blasting them and then doing Durabak on them or something.

Love the build, but even more I love what you are investing with those students. You can say money well spent and it will return to you multiplied. Glad you did an XJ for us to see instead of another YJ build :D:laughing::D:laughing::D:laughing:

Can't wait to see some action shots and I'm sure those students can't wait to get some action shots.

Love the build, but what's that steel going from the cross-member to the "frame"?

MuddyPaws
04-20-2008, 09:29 PM
That is a re-inforcing bracket. There are sleeves welded into the frame and stuff. The crossmember is bolted up into the frame, and then the bracket wraps around and bolts sideways though the frame. Then there is a long plate welded to the inside of the frame.

MuddyPaws
04-20-2008, 09:33 PM
Oh, and action shots will be coming soon. May 2 is the first run of the season. It has been out once for a shakedown int he snow and everything worked. I have put about 300 miles on it now and all seems good. Having a bit of a overheating issue when running 70mph. Gotta track that down.

May 2 is the first run of the year out to drummond island. Rocks galore out there. I can't wait.

We were going to go do some more shakedown wheelin last weekend out to our favorite rock spot around here...about 20 miles away, but the report from there said there was still about 3 feet of snow in the woods and the trails were a mess. We called it off.

Where is Drummond Island? and is it a public place to wheel

MuddyPaws
04-24-2008, 07:19 PM
Drummond Island is off the Eastern end of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

There are miles of trails on public land and there is an off road park called Turtle Ridge there also. 20 bucks gets you into the park.

New updates.....

Time for bead locks.......

I don't know if i'll ever actually get to use them because I might have to sell, but here is the build so far on them.

First, started with these rims...

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/locks/1.JPG

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/locks/2.JPG

Had to move the valve stem to make it easier to fill the tire. Welded the old one closed, drilled a new hole.

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/locks/3.JPG

Then some sand blasting.

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/locks/4.JPG

Then some grinding. Rims were pitted far worse than they looked at first.

After the design was drawn on CAD then it was off to the CNC Plasma Cam.

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/locks/6.JPG

Cut the drops first. I will powdercoat them and sell them to offset the cost of the metal for the bead locks. The "S" is for Sault Sainte Marie....or whatever. The paw prints got cut wrong. I wanted the prints larger. I'll have to see if I can use them.

But here are the inners and outers cut, and some of the drops.

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/locks/7.JPG

Here is the inner ring fitted.

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/locks/8.JPG

Still have to do the welding, bolt hole cleaning, sanding, powder coat....etc.

Well, got one of the rings ready for welding this afternoon. I should have the rest done this weekend. The plasma doesn't cut like a laser so there is a little bit of sanding and stuff to make them perfect. Then a trip to the blaster and they are all set.

Finished these.....

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/tire-cut/DSC00590.JPG

Cut the centers only.

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/tire-cut/DSC00584.JPG

They flex way better. I would not have believed it if I didn't feel it myself.

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/tire-cut/DSC00585.JPG

Now when you push on them, the cut areas can come together and wrap around the rocks better.

http://www.timstrader.com/web/builds/tire-cut/DSC00586.JPG

Lots of tid-bits.
