I have already posted this in the Ford section and didn't get any response so I guess I'll try it here. I have found a 78 F250 front axle (dana 60) with drum brakes. Can someone give me some info on what this axle should be: 35 spline? open or closed knuckle? and how hard would it be to convert to disk brakes? I really need to know soon so I can get it before someone else gets it.
Thanks

If its a 1978 ford Front 60 it should not have drums. It should be a high pinion, disc, open knuckle, about 69-70" wide. If it was a rear it could have drums, be from a 78 and there would be no knuckles
I hope this helps

No, I'm not sure. I can't look at the axle (about 2k mi away). I'm just going off what the guy said. And a pic. I'm trying to get the pic posted so you guys can take a look. The whole drum brake thing threw me for a loop. Thanks for the reply's.

Hey ya crazy Okie
Is it for your 4Runner? I'm pretty sure Ford front axles have driver's side diffs and that is gonna be a problem unless you're doing some major changes with the rest of your drivetrain. Otherwise, have you checked the pirate bible (in the tech section)? It might have some good info.

Hey LOK&LOD, this is not for my current runner it is however for my new project and I need a driverside diff. I got this pic from the guy and it looks like a closed knuckle 60. So I guess I'm gonna pass. It was just a sweet deal he only wanted 400 for it. But I don't think it will do me any good. If I'm wrong someone please let me know so I can jump on it. Thanks.

I saw this one too Too bad about the drum
brakes though I thought the kingpin style
w/disk brakes was introduced in '78

Chad, dont get that, it looks like junk. Most D60's only use 1 u-bolt on the pumpkin side. I see a lot of other differences than what mine has too. Besides the drums. Trust me converting that crap aint cheap, I still need a set of calipers for mine. Oh yea, I ended getting one about 2 weeks ago, complete less calipers, even has stock spicer locking hubs $350 boooya I scored. I knew if I waited it would come. I might know where a couple are here in WF. I will look. Got a ford one for $100 about 5 months ago, but my buddy traded it for labor on his cage. I spotted it, he had the cash so it was really his. Later

I think hes talking about the chevy 60. On the pumpkin side it has 1 U-bolt and 2 studs that screw into houseing. My ford 60 has 2 U-bolts,I kinda like the U-bolts after seeing a few of the studs pull out.

they use 2 bolts that screw into the cast diff housing on the short side.
Don't the drum brake 60's like the on pictured have the smaller shafts and just 297x U jionts?
