: Screwed up tranny bolt...

We are taking the 258 out of my 87 YJ and replacing it with a 258 out of an 85 CJ7. Things were going really well with the exception of one tranny bolt. Its a torx bolt and its kind of screwed up...not to mention in a hard to reach place.

The options that we think we have at this point are these..

1) Pull out the driveshaft, lift the engine up, take the motor mounts off and then drop the engine down as far as it will go and reach the bolt that way.

2) Take the entire front off of the jeep...bumper, winch, grill and everything else thats in the way...then pull the engine, tranny and t-case out all at once.

So...any other suggestions? We've worked on this bolt for 2 evening now and its slowing down our progess!

Also....if any of you Colorado would like to help out it would be greatly appreciated!!! I'm not much help to Rob(Jettech) so he's kind of dealing with all this crap on his own! He's a very patient man! ;)

Thanks in advance for any suggestions! :roxy:

Too bad you don't have air. Sometimes torx come off easier with a mild impact type thing.

I would try #1 first the motor mounts need to come off anyway. If that's a no go try #2

Roxy, Yall forgot step one of a Jeep engine swap.

Pull the hood, grill and fenders off first, then worry about the other parts.... makes life a whole lot easier...

That would have made things easier...but we are working on it in front of my house.....my driveway is on too steep of a hill to work on it there and it won't fit in the garage...not to mention that we are trying to get it done as quickly as possible since I'm renting a car to get back and forth to work. This damned bolt is costing me $$$ Ahhhhh.....the joys of jeep ownership! :D :roxy:

maybe an impact chizle to get the head off (if you can get the IC in there), then use a tap(im not to sure of the exact name but you drill a small pilot whole in the bolt then a reverse threaded wedge is used to remove the remained of the bolt) i hate such small things like that, makes we want to use my torch to cut it off:nuke:

i dunno if it's the same thing i had to deal with, but are they the two little ones at the very top of the bellhousing?

I just pulled a 4.0 in an XJ this past friday, and i had to unbolt the motor from the mount and drop it down as far as it would go to give me enough room to run a mile of extensions up from the bottom of the jeep.

make DAMN sure you're using the right size socket (does it take a torx bit or torx socket?) the 2 i had to get off were torx e10 sockets (IIRC)

shoulda brought tools on vacation, i'm actually in denver right now. and as soon as i get back home, i gotta finish rebuilding that 4.0, and drop it back in.

Good luck, and replace that torx crap with a real bolt.

you work on Jeeps, too? I thought you just lived in the Chit-Chat forum.:flipoff2:

if these are the bolts Ithink they are, then get a hole saw and punch a hole inthe tranny tunnel/firewall to get a looong extension in there and have someone with OBA or a Ptank come by and knock it out. It's REALLY nice to have those holes there, anyway, for the next time you do a clutch, tranny swap, whatever

Since you are replacing the eng, why not just drill the bolt until the head comes off? I've done that several times to get parts separated and then deal w/ the remains of the bolt.
It's one fo them that hold the tranny to the belhousing, the bellhousing is aluminum, put a helicoil in after the bolt is drilled out.

What about unbolting the tranny from the bellhousing?

Or just destroying the bellhousing and getting a new one?

Might as well get the tranny from the CJ as well, as that Peugeot is crap...

After thought: Ignore the above statements if you've got an auto in there.

Lafayette, Louisiana---> home of nothing, we dont have that many places to ride around here, for anything even close to some real trails, climbs, and rivers (i mean creeks) we go about 2 hours north to Lake Cincade which is in Kasachee (Spl?) National Park, Yes National Park

If you've got a welder handy, weld a regular nut the the top of the torx nut and use a regular socket.

Is it one of the two inverted torx bolts at the top of the bellhousing? I know TJ's have 'em. I don't know about CJ's though.

If not, ignore my rambling. If this is the bolt you speak lowly of, I've always had luck pounding (read: pounding) a tight 12 point socket on to them and them just twisting 'em out with a ratchet or impact with a bunch of extensions and a universal or 2 or 3.

you can use that method to get out broken bolts and studs too, just weld a washer to the broken stud then weld a nut to the washer, works great.

Holy crap. What I mentioned about filing away in my brain for future reference....I totally killed those brain cells years back...thanks for reminding me again.
