: Big 4.0L problems-Jeep techs please help!

I have my wheelin' friend's 92 Cherokee Limited at my house because he does not have the time to mess with it himself so I put a bunch of parts on it for him to try to get him back on the trail but my efforts have been proven useless.
The problem- When the Jeep reachs full operating temperature (~210) it cuts the ignition, no hesitation, no stumble, just cuts it off clean. This happens every time it reachs operating temp and when it cools down for atleast 20 or so minutes it will start again but will shut off soon after in the same manner. The computer is giving us a code of 32 which says the computer cannot read air/fuel ratio once egr system has reached operating temp or something like that. The only problem with that is that there is no egr valve in this cherokee and the egr system I would think usually would not shut the motor off.

Parts that have replaced- I replaced the coil, dist. cap and rotor, and ign. pick up sensor inside the dist., and the temp sensor. All of which did nothing.

Does anyone here have any idea or any experience with this type problem? Both me and my friend are running out of ideas and we need this thing fixed!
PLEASE HELP!
Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the CPS is getting hot and shutting off. I have had to replace a few of those for the very same problem.

I'd have changed the MAP and the CPS before that other stuff.

You know, an hour of diagnostic time at a decent shop with a scanner should isolate it right away, and save you buying and installing unnecesary parts. But, it should run real good once you find out what it is.

And be like you and never finish my project.....no thanks.
Get that thing done will yeah! I've built three trucks since you have started that damn thing and you were the only guy around I could've wheeled the jeep with. So hurry up 'cause we got quite a group going now. Call me sometime soon to check out the blazer and take a ride around one weekend. We found a whole bunch of good stuff pretty local.

Thanks again guys hopefully this thing will be out of here!

vote for a new cps. DO a little search on gapping techniques if you have not changed one before.

mine is also doing something similar...reaches operating temp, sputters then shuts off and wont crank til it cools...cps?

Possibility of cooling fan faulting someting out? Id pull the fan relay see what that does. Inspect air fule wires and such could be a fault in the wires there. Unless you want to buy a new computer and continue throwing parts at it

or the fact that when it hits op temp it actually starts reading the O2 sensor.
possible short in the o2 sensor that freaks out the ECU when it goes closed loop?

It should hit closed loop at around 180, plus the o2 is operating all the time, it's just that the computer is ignoring it until then.

Ditto on taking it to a shop for a 1 hour diag. Most competent techs with a scanner should be able to isolate it. Problem is, they really only have 1 shot to find it until they have to let it cool again. Still, you'd have $100-125 in diag + parts, or you end up doing shotgun method and trying all kinds of non-returnable parts.

*edit* Oops, you already tried the shotgun method, might as well keep going, not many sensors left. Throw a CPS, TPS, MAP and O2 in and call it good. Should run like a champ after that.
