Ok fill me in here: I keep reading about pepole braking inner axels on the front ends of their rigs. (Yes yes I know running "Longfeilds") Yikes! :eek: So what side tends to brake first?

If it is long side axles, I will have to kick myself for using them as welding table legs! (got a doz. or so stacked up from robbing Birfields out of mini's, so I put a few to work:( )

Go ahead and use the mini-truck inners as table legs. They won't fit in your FJ40. They would fit in your FJ62, but I am assuming your '40 is the trail rig with the greater possibility of axle-breakage.

From a physics and "what-i've-seen" standpoint, the short sides tend to go first. The long side can help absorb more of the shock..

But, if you have the left tire wedged, turned, and in reverse, plan on the long side going pop before the short side.

And yeah, what Camel said, the long sides won't work on your 40.

Short side 2-1 in my case. That assumes equal load on both sides. If the short side is in the air, it won't break, haha! Longer axle absorbs more torsional stress/force before it gives up.

Bobby Long shared this with me yesterday. He cut (openings) in a housing up so he could see whats going on inside. I gathered he was trying to see how the steering stop adjustments effect the breakage of the inners. He witnessed the tweaking of the outer end of the axle if the stops were too far out. He suggested tightening them up some to prevent this.

Thats my plan, since I had been running them just tight enough to keep the tire lugs off the springs!

That's it! Yes I will weld up one you can leave your cold :beer: sitting on and not worry about the ring... heck just whip out the grider and resurface the bugger!

I'd actually put a table made with axle parts in my living room. I might even wipe the grease off first.
