Anyone having any problems with the housing around the drain plug getting really F@#$ed up from sliding over rocks. The plug barely fits back on, and there is no way in hell to get a socket over it. I have been considering welding my shut. The front plug must have rattled loose, scraped on a rock, and popped off. Oops there goes all my gear oil (damn). Anyways any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

Lots of the major cruiser parts houses sell allen-head drain plugs.
They're much lower profile & you dont have to worry about getting a socket over it because you use an allen wrench.
I think I got mine from Specter.

I saw a company that made recessed hex head drains, or you could put a slider (cage) on the diff
I don't think welding is such a good idea:shaking:

Another option (albeit not cheap) is to shave the bottom of the diff to eliminate the plug, and convert the bottom nut on the 3rd member into a nut for draining...
My front diff has been converted to a cover-type setup, which is another option, but a hex-head drain plug is much easier...

My plug was also hard to get a socket on. I was able to hammer a 12 point socket (thinner wall) onto the bolt. It worked great and loosened up the gap so now the socket fits right on.

Yeah, I tried the ground down socket, and hammering bit. It worked OK, but after the last run the case is hammered. I think I will try the hex head plug. Thanks for the help.

If you buy from Specter you'll find that the allen head "improved" plug is actuially cheaper than a stock replacement;)

Mine was also too bent to hammer a socket into.
about 180 deg was touching the head of the drain plug.
I used a die grinder with a cutter small enough to fit
in between the head of the plug and the non-bent side.
Had it opened back up in a matter of minutes.
Then installed the flush type plug.

The drain plug from the transfer case on a mini truck A340H auto trans. is what you are after (hex plug).
