- No more drum brakes!!!!!! :D

- No more hart attacks every single time I have to make a hard stop!!

- No more adjusting those stupid drums every month!

- No more double pumping the brake pedal to make the damn drums work!!

- No more spending a fortune on replacement parts!!

Finally got my disc brakes today, they came of an eighties Lj70 (or something like that). Cost me 300 euro's for everything inculding Aisin hubs!!

No more drums!! Allright let's drink to that!

Congrats, but aren't those minitruck brakes? I thought the later model LC's with discs were vented rotors like mine?

I also tought that, but i took them off of the parts truck myself, they came of of an 70 series truck.

I'd would of rather have the vented rotors, but i don't live in the mountains, don't do lot's of heavy towing with my Bj and cruise relaxed so the solid discs should do just fine.

I hear your cry's. I just put new axles with 4 wheel disc. They are awesome. I can actually stop now. It's nice to know when you are on a rock cliff.
Good luck

Huh.. with cars, seems the Euro models always get the better brakes, but with the LC's there's no telling...

Anyway, congrats!

Regarding the non-vented rotors, I looked Jeff Zepps, HZJ70 over real good at Cruise Moab, and they are a unique vehicle, lots of mixing and matching of parts we in the US are not used to seeing together, for instance the front axle is conventional LC on the outers, but the diff is Mini-80 style.....his had vented rotors though.

The LJ70s use mini truck diffs

okay bit of 70 series tech for you guys:

LJ and RJ 70 series actually have minitruck running gear

they get: hilux engine either 20R, 22R, or 2L, hilux G52 gearbox or similar, landcruiser, modfiied split case, non-centred rear diff, with hilux centre and axles (semi float) high pinion front diff, with mini centre, mini outers and mini discs, that why they are solid

if the truck was:
either a HJ, FJ, or BJ, 70/73/75 you would see vented rotors up front, but diesel cruiser, dont stress, they should bolt up, as they are exactly the same as hilux/minitruck
also the HJ, FJ, and BJ, got full size front diffs!

the HZJ (1990 onwards) FZJ FZE HDTJ (et all) got smaller high pinion front diffs, with reverse rotation, this is supposed to have similar strength and is similar to teh 80 series front diff......BUT, has leafs, until 78 series, (with front coils, rear leafs) not as wide as 80 series, and the CVs are smaller than 80 series, but have a snap ring on the outside......

someone over at toyota was :smokin:

you get to know when you see the models all the time, and the parts, trying to do conversions and stuff :p  nothing ever "bolts right on" :mad3: :nuke:

I hope you got the birfields too.... I didn't see them in the pics. :D

Eskimo: Euro models get the better brakes??? NO way, my cruiser was built in 1980 and still had drum brakes all around. So don't tell me we get better brakes :-)

Texican: About the vented rotors, what is the advantage of vented of solid rotors?? I think (don't know very much about it) that solid and vented rotors both have the same stopping power, but the solid rotors heat up under heavy braking?
But i live in a flat country, don't do a lot of heavy towing so the brakes won't get very hot and I will never have tires over 35". So there would be no real advantage of vented over solid rotors for me? Or am i wrong??

Sixty: nope i don't have the birfields, no need for them over here in europe, the later model cruisers came with fine spline birfields and drum brakes, so the my birfield are identical to the 70 series birfs. Attached a pic of my original 1980 Bj40 birfields.

I thought that might be the case.... I couldn't remeber what year your BJ was & I thought I remember you asking awhile ago for coarse spline birfields. w/ an 80 you are set (extra birfields might have been nice).

I've done .....way too many conversions on old drum brake Cruisers to count, using mini components, and some using FJ60 components (vented rotors). I can tell no difference in the stopping ability one way or another. The only advantage the vented would have would be to disperse the heat, on a 40 in the mountains, loaded heavy, or towing a trailer, these type situations.
The way 98% of us use these trucks, we are never going to need this.
Now if I had an Old Pig, no way am I putting solid rotors on it. Nolen is using FJ60 components on his. I did the old Wardens trick on his steering arms so it should be a bolt up......I guess it was or he would have squealed like one.
;) :D

Excuse my ignorance :rasta: but what exactly is the old "Wardens" trick?

Asked about the birfs because i wasn't sure whate type of birfs i had. And about the spares, i porbably won't ever brake one, caus 35" tyres is the largest tire I'll run and there is no hardocore rockcrawling here in Belgium. :flipoff2: And even if i should brake one, the parts guy where i bought the discs from has a stack of them lying around his shop.

Stupid thing breaks down more than it drives!! Everyone keeps telling me that you can't ride a car like a 4X4 and i keep proving them wrong :D, the secret is keeping the momentum up :D .
Lost my front bumper twice, finally i ratchet strapped it to the grille, so now the fawker can't fall off anymore :D .

I miss my cruiser!! :(
